G'day fellow gamers.
I wondering about two things:
1) Would it be acceptable if i were to use a Dragon Ogre Shaggoth as a Chaos Giant?
2) Can Dragon Ogre Shaggoths be marked with a God of Chaos in the new Warriors of Chaos army book?
These queries are in support to whether Warriors of Chaos would be an acceptible army to start. I'm considering having an army dedicated to Khorne and i feel the plastic Giant kit will not exactly fit in to an army of Khorne (maybe nurgle) even with some converting.
1) Technically, giant means "really big", so as long as your opponent knows that the big scary creature isn't a Shaggoth, instead being a Giant (imagine the relief). Though this depends on your opponent. Some people are stricter than others in this respect.
2) Sadly no, the Shaggoth cannot be given marks of chaos, due to it not being an entry. (It was the Shaggoth Champions that got the marks in the days of olde anyway)
Hope that answers your questions.
Then i suppose i couldn't use a Dragon Ogre Shaggoth as a Giant in a tournament because it is a proxy, even though it is a giant in size and does not exactly hold any special weapons or wearing any armor?
That would be something you'd be best off talking to the tournament organiser(s) about, as while you may find some are pretty loose with that kind of thing (heck, I've been allowed to enter a goblin warboss mounted on a gnoblar scraplauncher in an AoD on another site- you just never what some people would allow) whilst others would be real upholders of the WSYWIG Creed. Again, if you're allowed to do it, you'd have to let your opponent know what you're doing before the game with regards to any proxies.
So yeah, ask. After all, you have nothing to lose.
What's the reason anyway? Have you bought a Shaggoth model and don't like it?
The great thing about Chaos Giants is they can pretty much be any big looking model, which AFG already mentioned. I used a wingless Bloodthirster as a giant for ages!
In terms of Tournaments, most are WYSIWIG, and the only problem I see is the Great Weapon. Change it far a club, or a big tentacle or something, and thats enough. Maybe some other conversions, so it's clear that it's not a Shaggoth.
The final thing I'd do is change his base to size of the giants' - 60x40mm. It might matter if he gets flanked.

The concern I have is that they are both options in the Army Book. And to some degree even the fact that they're both Rare options causes me more concerns.
If you were to use a Shaggoth in an O&G army, then it's more acceptable to call it a Giant because the Shaggoth's not available to them; but a Shaggoth is a Shaggoth and a Giant is a Giant in the WoC book.

It is very annoying. I just don't see a big, fat and clumsy Giant fitting into a Khorne army is all. I want to field one but the model just doesn't do it for me. But i guess i will have to use the plastic model as i would like to option of entering tournaments with out being hassled with the WYSIWYG moto.
Khorne is the epitomy of martial prowess, strength and bravery.
Giants fit 2 out of 3 of those!!!
Why do you want to use the Giant rules so badly??
Is there a particular reason you don't like the Shaggoth rules? is it purely because the shaggoth can't have a mark or is there another reason?
Hmm. A Khornate giant would be pretty cool, actually. You could take one of the Khorne standards and paint it up to look like it was carved from stone, hang it around his neck like a giant talisman. Lots of skulls on there, red body paint. Coooooool.
