Welcome to Librarium Online!
So. I really love the old models and due to the rapid fall of the British Pound i'm ordering some.
While I think they might make a good addition to my all cav army (4x 5 marauder horsemen, 1x 5 knights & 3x 5 dawgs) in pure punishing power I was lokking at how to kit them out. Should I ho with their normal point cost, or add a great wep for the +12 points since they already are slow on the initiative?
And another thing: in the army book they are discribed as having scaly skin (5+ save) and light armour. Ths does give them a 4+ save? (just checking, i'm a disaster with the armour saves).
At first I was thinking about including them in an 1500pts list, but now i'm thinking of including them in my 1000pts list. It does mean I must trade in two units of horsemen (one with flails, the other with axes) With their 12w against two unitits with a combined 10w it looks good, but it also means I lose one flanking unit.
What do you think?
Hey I love the old models too, but I use them in small games with the additional hand weapon as I found that S5 is good enough for most things at this size game, I used them in a small game (1000pts) a few weeks back and i only lost one but I managed to kill 21 empire spearmen, a connon and 4empire knights, it was a good game!
The great weapons are good if your going to be facing foes with a good armour save but other than that in small games Ithink its best to take AHW, as you are still wounding on a 3/2+, not bad odd's Ithink. Also you are right about the scaly skin plus light armour it does give them a 4+ Sv,
They do tend to draw alot of enemy fire but mine managed to weather it and i used all the cover I could to protect them then smash my enemies in to the dirt. let me know how it goes!
in small games, I'm not sure they're worth taking at all. You can get an ogre with chaos armor, great weapon and MoK for around 50pts each. Unless the extra movement is your clincher, the ogres are cheaper and just as effective.
The main reason to take dragon ogres is their resiliency, and their ability to be str7 with great weapons. Str7 kills stuff with armor, it destroys T6 monsters, blows up chariots immediately. It eats T5 monsters up etc. If you don't need the abilties of str7, you probably don't need the dragon ogres.
As far as the models go, the bottom half is fine, but the top half is terrible and makes them unable to be looked at.
