Welcome to Librarium Online!
Please forgive me, but so far my understanding of the game relies just on the basic rune book. If there is some exception to the rule for Chaos Warriors, then please let me know.
When people on this forum are talking about how they gear out their Chaos Warriors, a popular setup seems to be going for a halberd and a shield. For example, there is a poll on this forum with the following options:
Shield + Hand Weapon
Additional hand weapon
Shield + Halberd
Shield + Great weapon
SHield + Additional hand weapon
However, on page 56 of the basic rule book, it says that halberds require two hands. It also stated in the rule book that shields can be worn on the backs of models wearing 2-handers, but they offer no protection in battle.
Is it possible for you to swap what your guy is wearing in the middle of the battle, if he is "equipped" with both weapons? i.e. If they have great weapons and shields, they start the game out with great weapons, but in turn 3, I want to switch to a hand weapon and shield?
At the start of a combat, you get to choose which weapon(s) to use. The model must then use that gear for the duration of the combat. This is located at the bottom left of the first page, I think, of the Equipment section. (Sorry for not giving page numbers.)
As all Warriors come with a hand weapon, a warrior who is given a halberd and shield could choose to either wield the halberd for extra strength, or use the hand weapon and shield for greater defense.

Makes sense, thanks.
Just making sure I'm not crazy... or am I?
You're a chaos player........
And don't forget that you can switch back to shields once a combat is over. You're not stuck with the weapon you chose in the first combat for the remainder of the battle.
Not to mention that many people are glad to have the extra armor save against shooting, even if they never use it in combat. I'd say that's worth the extra point.
Empire halberdiers get the same option with a point for a shield. In some cases it might be better, especially when charged: the get a better save and a change to strike back faster.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

The Dutch Legion
I've said it once and I'll say it a thousand times: Regardless of the weapon they carry, even if they will never use the shield in close combat, 15 points to outfit a 15 man unit of Chaos Warriors with shields is always worth it. You need only make one 3+ save versus shooting/magic and you've recouped the investment, as a single Warrior is (at the absolute cheapest) 15 points. Once you start considering investments like halberds, great weapons or even additional hand weapons, the ROI is even greater. And units of 10-12 are a total no-brainer. At least that's how I look at it.
Trying to find some tiny hobby chain so I can model my Khorne Warriors (additional hand weapons or great weapons) with shields on their backs ...
