If you don't go for a god specific mount, do you take a Daemonic mount, or a regular barded steed for the additional armour?
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
It depends what i want him for really, If i want him to beat the snot out of infantry the extra attack and str5 of the deamonic mount are really useful, But if i want him to be challenging all the hard ass enemy hero's i'd probably go for the steed.
But i went for the deamonic mount purely because archaons horse is a damn good model

I agree with Lord Borak! daemonic mounts are way cooler
Besides in my gaming group enemy characters tend to use armour denying items so ward saves are more useful for that purpose (or the rune shield).
I would also add that it causes fear, which is nothing to be sneezed at. Every once in a while, your opponent will fail its leadership test, wasting its own turn. For a Ld of 9, a unit will fail to charge your lord 1 time out of 6. Pretty good!
That said, keep in mind that it's still 34 more points than the steed. Ask yourself, if those 34 points could not be used to improve your other magic items/gifts of chaos. If yes, well, choose wisely between both.
Since the mount is bigger, if he's going into a unit and saving 2 spots, then you could consider him saving you points instead of costing more. Not bringing 2 chosen is close to 40 points.

For me it really depends on the size game Im playing but I always put him on a daemonic steed if I have the points spare. I will agree that the new daemonic mounted lord model is fantastic, I still converted another lord from the knights and several other bits, as I wanted to have both in my force.
If a mounted Lord model can fit onto a 25x50, assuming the mount iself can pass as a barded steed, I intend to create two separate bases: a cav base for a barded steed and a 5x5 for the daemonic mount option. The two that immediately leap to mind are the new undivided Lord on the kickass steed/mount and the old Nurgle Lord on the skeletal horse.
