Ok, which special characters are and are not worth their points, and who do you think is the best. Personally, I think Sigvald is definatly worth the points and is actually a steal at being under 500 points. I have seen a Slannesh army led by sigvald massacre a VC army, simply because Sigvald would kill the general each time. Arhcaon I guess is worth it, depends on how you use him. Most people have played agaisnt The Lord of the End Times from last edition and Storm of chaos, since he has slightly changed. The tactics against him haven't changed much. They pretty much avoic him at all costs. Villitch is pretty good. But it entirely dpends on how much magic your opponet has. Against a Slann or Teclis, do not expect him to get extra dice. Kholek, yes he is worth the points. You'd have to be incredibly unlucky or make serious stupid mistakes with him to loose him at times. Wulfirk, meh, good in challenges but depends on who he fights. Most players (my HE included) Just shoot or magic his butt to death as soon as hes on the field. My bolt throwers have skewered him many times. The others I have not used so Input from you all would be appreicated.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
It really depends really. Each character is powerful in their own right if used correctly.
Archaon is well Archaon. He kills stuff.....nuff said.
Sigvald is great for tearing up the front rank of any unit and is also great for minimising the number of casualties his unit takes. He is designed to keep a particular unit in the fight.
Vilitch is good at magic and blasting things to pieces with magic and is not too bad in combat.
Festus is actually a pretty decent character that is often underestimated. The poison and regeneration he grants can be quite powerful on the right unit.
Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
I rate the troll king i had him against the empire in a unit of trolls and he won me the game and looks a solid buy.
Kholek is a massively powerful character whose only weakness is he's inititaive (i.e death globes and other initiative test gubbins) although he is costly
Vilitch is interesting i have used him and he did a solid job without being outstanding against dark elves.
Archaon is a good general who can hold he own against pretty much anything.
The only real poor characters I can see are Galrauch who is not as good as a sorcerer on a dragon, sigvald who is not as good as a basic lord and battle standard bearer and no he will not kill the front rank on he's own if he is facing decent troops (e.g. saurus).
My personal favourites are the troll king and Kholek.
I've considered the idea of lumping Festus in with a unit Khornate warriors with additional hand weapons.
The regen helps with their lack of Shield and they can throw out a satisfying number of poisoned attacks. Originally, I wanted to throw him in with Forsaken but I'd take the 4 attacks from Kornite Warriors over the D3+1 any day and with Festus limiting their movement; the Warriors work out cheaper, better and without sacrificing a Special slot.
But if I were going to take a Special character, it would be Valkia. She just looks fun, and I'd relish the conversion oppertunity.
I like Scyla, for the extra Strength, wound, attack, Ward save and Magic Resistance (3). He's much more likely to hold a unit in place than the regular spawn.
Vilitch is awesome. Your opponent HAS to think really hard before casting. A bad casting roll and "BOOM" you've got 4 extra dispel dice. The same goes for dispelling. No more "well it is it's last spell, so I might as well try to dispel it even if I'm not sure it will succeed". And, yes, he can hold his own in a challenge, or any fight.
Sigvald, with Stubborn, is really good.
Festus too, especially since Chaos armies will get shot at alot since they have to cross the battlefield.
Favourites are festus Koleck and archeon
Haven't tried troll king or vilitch
Sigvlad is too expensive for a lord who will be in comat by turn 3 or 4. And he can be avoided since he is on foot.
they are all broken one way or another exept galrauch who can be beaten by a sorcerer on dragon.
Daemonic cheese-how? Well, you would need to start with daemonic milk, i guess...
Best for the points cost is the Troll King. The guy is amazing for under 200 points and a hero slot, and is probably the closest thing WoC has to a broken model/combo.
Most fun is definitely Kholek, tho. You can't play him without making "Hulk Smash!" noises, it's great.
Trust in your core choices - love them, hate them, wish them dead to clear charges, but remember that come end they will pull off a miracle for you.
I've used Sigvald, He's nails. LD10 and stubborn was enough to convince me. LD10 in a chaos army is rare so to have a LD10 character was a bit of a novelty for me. He's brilliant at scything down infantry. Especially against High elves . But only being Str5 he can't cope with heavy armoured stuff and tough well armoured characters. He is heavily armoured himself and with regen he can take a bit of a beating before going down. That said i've not lost him yet
Festus, this Fella is just brilliant. Ok he's personally not killy but the benefits he gives to a unit are worth the points. Frenzied nurgle warriors with halberds? 15 attacks from 5 warriors. with poison with a -2 save modifier? Erm yes please???? oh AND with a 5+ regenerate save? May i have your babies?
As for the others I can't say as i've not used them.
I love Kholeck and Throgg, i proxied a monster list
3 Dragon Ogres
Ive never had so much fun!
Kholeck makes so many armies panic, ok hes a lot of points but he has a ranged attack for anywhere on the board! (hello lone mage) and in combat he will hold his own against almost everything.
Throgg as Raverrn says is the best for his points cost, not only does he allow you to have Trolls as core but he acts as a BSB! and General for monsters.
I have yet to use Festus, i love the idea but my own problem with him is his lack of Armour (and he will cut out another mage with dispel scroll) i will have to try him at some point before my tournament.
Valkia is amazing.
i used her against my friends woc , with the +2 strength bonus on the charge she really kills anything.
just watch out for giants, being stuffed down the pants of a giant with MoS it is quite embarrassing.
