Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been comtemplating taking one of these 3 rare choices but I can't decide for the points value what to get. Point for point, regardless of theme, and in an army built for an all comers, which one would you all (the masters of WoC) pick? The Pros and Cons of each, and what mark if any to put on them. Thanks in advance for all the help again
The Giant is fun, but he's a hard sell in a competitive list (imo). Spawns are great, being unbreakable. A pair of them can hold up an enemy unit for quite awhile, if not outright win the fight if you roll lucky. Causing fear can throw a spanner into the works for your enemy, never to be underestimated. Hellcannon is awesome. I love it. Causing panic at -1 Ld just for hitting something with a template is golden, nevermind it's beastly statline. Terror, unbreakable, moves like a skirmisher (6" march, move or shoot), 12" charge range.
Spawn are my first choice in an all-comer list. Both the HC and the Giant are large targets, so they stick out like sore thumbs during the magic and shooting phases. Spawn are useful regardless, at the very least they take the heat off your more precious units for minimal investment. Plus, their movement allows you to change direction at will, allowing you to fend off fliers and other annoying skirmishers. HC comes in a close second. It's a damn fine unit. Giant, I love the big bastard, but he's simply too random to count on in a serious game (again, imo). Spawn are random, yeah, but not to the same extent.
Ultimately, I'd love to have both Spawn and the Hellcannon in a list. They both serve a purpose, and anything unbreakable is absolutely money. I also plan to field a Giant, but I doubt I would in a competitive setting.

The Blessed of the Four
By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes.
I would go for a pair of spawn as 1 isn't really good enough
A giant is fun but I wouldn't use it
a hellcannon just is not that good
Daemonic cheese-how? Well, you would need to start with daemonic milk, i guess...
I find the Hellcannon amazing. I've destroyed Dragons, Lords, Dragon Mages, and the list goes on and on! If nothing else, it's good for making them move around! If you're against a shooty army, they don't like being shot at themselves, so the Hellcannon does serious damage as well as just being scary. It's been the MVP of my army many times.
No, I don't have any wool.
Being Unbreakable is really nice. At T5 and W3 they are not going to go down quite easily. Always bring a pair when you want to use them. They work nicely as flank guards. The downside of them is their random Movement value. In a fast, cavalry heavy army, you'd be hard pressed if the Spawns move 2" while the rest of the army moves 14+". I'd only ever bring them if I'm having difficulty with points allocation and anything other than cavalry heavy army. That and having S4, he's not gonna kill any big stuff.
- Toughness 5
- Wounds 3
- Random M value
- Strength 4
Big, smelly, ugly, need I say more? They might not be competitive, but bringing a pair of them might send chills down your opponent's spine. They can work as arrows, bolts, bullets, and cannonballs magnet. Similarly with Spawns, these boys have T5 and W6, which means they ain't going down easily. The thing about them is their random attacks. While they may not have definite destructive power, they do bring "fun" in bashing your opponent. Fun as in you don't know what the Giant will do. Will he Yell and Bawl, effectively winning the combat in his favor without exchanging wounds (thus tar-pitting the unit)? Will he Jump Up and Down then Fall Over (which hurts)? They are fun and can cause mayhem for both players (the Giant falling over your own units then died).
- Fun as in random attacks
- Big shooting magnet
- Wounds 6
- Movement 6, which can keep up with my cavalry forces
- Erm, big?
- Random attacks
- Possibility of Falling Over on your own units, then die
I don't know why people say Hellcannon is bad, cause they rock! Well, if they mean bad as in accurate shooting, then yes. They shoot as a stone-thrower, which means they are hardly inaccurate. Yet what most people forgot is their capability in close combat. Terror and Unbreakable, with S5 T6 and W5, they are not, by any means, uncapable of doing close combat. Heck, bring a pair (see a trend here?) and put them in either flanks. They prove to be great flank guards with their stat lines. And while they suck at shooting accurately, when they score a hit, it WILL hurt. If you want to field them then I suggest you brush up on guessing ranges
- Hurts like hell shooting
- Rock hard unit
- Highly unreliable accuracy
- Metal model is expensive and hard to work with
So there's my take on the question posed, however unreliable, mistaken, and misleading it may be
All three have their specific purposes and work perfectly given the correct army composition and playstyle. Personally, having a fast cavalry heavy army with heavy magic, the dual Hellcannon combo can work nicely. When there is no target left to shoot at, the Hellcannon themselves can then join into the fray and score some victims in cc. My only problem to them is they are expensive (needs a pair for maximum hurt) and I need to drop my Dragon Ogres to fit them in
ADD: No love for the Shaggoth?

Currently building my poor-hammer WoC army.
Well Black pretty much sums it up i think.
Spawns are great, 3 wounds, hard to hurt, able to pin an enemy unit in combat so you can position your units for a flank charge or what have you, they're cheap and expendable. Against shooty armies they're not brilliant, I find they're too slow to make it across the board and keep up with the rest of your units to be much use.
Giants, They're Fast, Big, scary, brilliant centerpeices for your army. They'll hardly ever run away from a fight so they're good for pinning enemy in place. They're not amazingly expensive in the grand scheme of things not considering they can hold against anything but their random attacks means you can't rely on them to deffinatly kill an enemy unit, pin it yes kill it no.
Hellcannons, well shooting attacks is cool but the small template isn't alot when you're paying 200pts for it. But having the ability to 'snipe' big things before they get to you is very handy. It's handy in a fight and will never run away so it has it's uses, but it can only march 6 inches a turn so it's going to lag behind untill it's in charge range. And now it can't move n fire it can't give your army moving support. It's a war engine than can defend itself or a slow monster........hmmm
Personally i prefer giants because a large bellowing rude thug who's constantly drunk is something i can relate too.

I'm finding that I like Hellcannons.
Not necessarily the shooting as even though my guesses are dead on, my scatter rolls are hilariously bad.
However, it is a T6 unbreakable unit that can also toss a bunch of S5 attacks at the enemy. You don't really want it going up against knights and such, but boy does it put a damper on rank and file.
The chance of absolutely demolishing something with shooting is also nice
It makes for a nice rear guard for my fairly slow moving warrior heavy army.
Everything is better with smut
