The Book of Secrets gives me a spell from Fire, Shadow, Death.
As I know relatively little about other WFB armies, I’d appreciate advice on which Lore to choose against particular armies: Brettonians, Empire, Wood Elves, High Elves, Dark Elves, Dwarves, Chaos Dwarves, Chaos Deamons, Beasts of Chaos, Daemons, Vampire Counts, Skaven, Orcs, Tomb Kings, Ogres, and Lizardmen.
Well you can pick from those three lores but there really isnt a big difference for many of them because the holder of the book of secrets can only cast with the book as a level one sorcerer. That means that the spell generated by the book is only going to be allowed to be cast with a maximum of two dice. So all the big spells are pretty much taken out by that.
With that said you have to take a heavy look at the first spell in each lore. Death and Fire have the same first spell and the castable spells are fairly the same. I prefer fire because I like the 2D6 Str 4 misslie you can get and I forgot what it is but there is another decent spell in fire that I think is better than the alternatives Death has.
Shadow is another option but the first spell is that movement spell. It is only really good if you are going to use the exalted catapalt strategy. Have another higher level caster cast call to glory on a marauder to turn him into a champion and then fling him 20 inches into an assult with the Shadow spell. Its really nice because since call to glory is a remains in play spell, you can choose to end the spell RIGHT BEFORE he has to take armor saves. This pretty much means that you are flinging in exalteds that cant be killed and therefore will never cost you victory points. This is a good strategy but be careful who you use it against because you could lose friends over such a strategy.
Normaly i take shadow. Just to remove my wizard from combat if i have to challenge, or indeed as said above, to launch exalted heros. Sometimes on my BSB ill use fire, just to get another ds str4 off
Heres a question, a chosen champion has the book, and his unit is marked tzeentch, does the book make him a sorcerer and therefor gains the +1 to cast?
yes it does, there is an article about chosen on the GW website
Please don't cut me at the knees short scary giner person with a beard.
I take fire against everything except HE and Death against them.
The basic magic missile is enough in most cases and sometimes you get a nice spell in between.
Although a Chosen Champion with the Book and the Flaming Sword is just wrong. He can cut anything to death.
