Welcome to Librarium Online!
I may or may not actually go through with this in the distant future but I wanted to throw this idea out there.
I really like the idea of malal. I know he isnt official anymore but this is a fantasy game. Fluff wise what you say goes pretty much. Well I was thinking of a way to create a malal themed army and think I have a rather decent idea. Its not even a new list it would just require some specific modeling.
Malal is on a god status and is followed by a rather small amount of worshippers in comparison to the rest of chaos from what I understand. Malal to me sounds too powerful to be represented by a chaos lord or even a demon prince with their rather bad combat abilities. Why not represent him with Kholek. Make a new model from scratch (same base size) and use kholeks statline which is rather god-like. This could lead to a lot of cool conversion ideas. Im thinking something nasty holding a severed bloodthirster head.
This list would also be rather small because you have a 600 point model in it and will probably need at least a scroll caddy as well. A fairly realistic force size-wise for Malal to have.
Paint up some warriors with malals color scheme, have some crazed converted marauders, and you have some followers of malal. As far as marks go, since you are going to this extent model wise I think it would be a good idea to keep a unifrorm mark. Either go unmarked, or I think it would even be a good idea to use an existing mark and may say it is malal's mark? That is a stretch if you want it to be fully fluffy, but is a way to still add some more to the army if you want.
After reading the thread on GW making this army not fun with how they changed fluff and whatnot I tried to think of a way to keep it fun. I think this is a solid idea that is going to be unique and not seen a lot and really sticks it to GW since it doesnt support their official fluff anymore.
What yall think?

Well while I support your goal of reviving a potentially fun part of our old fluff, I dont like the idea of uniform marks (why MoKhorne whyyyy just generate DDice like you do in daemons!!!)
If you wanted to, however, use one mark exclusivly I would say MoS is the best bet to go with, being able to ignore the outnumbering/fear and terror bombing stratagies IMO is 100% worth the mabie 80 points tops your gonna spend on MoSing the entire army.
And fluff wise you can always say, "Your zombies ant' scary, you should see the s**t Malal shows us for fun, then you'd know scary!"
And Kholek IMO, is a very powerful, yet oddly balanced character. Ive played over a halfdozen games with him and the only thing to keep in mind is that "pit of stupid take an I test" spell. Cannons (unless playing Thorek dwarfs...in which case God help you) can oddly be handled often by Kholeks shooting attack, unless you get my luck and roll frenzy, im not kidding, 5 times in a row....(just be sure to not use Kholek down the center and use him more like a flank collapser with a "sniping" lightning bolt)
Nice Idea. I would probably go for an all mounted army, since the followers of Malal are scarce and travel alot horses would be necessary for them.
And I agree with ztlambe about the MoS. Eventhough... wasn't Malal also known for luring troops of other gods in his own twisted plans?
Ya I know that this project wont produce the best competitive list but that isnt what Im shooting for. Im pretty much looking at a "fun" and "fluffy" army that is more impressive from a modeling and theme stand point. WoC cant produce tourny lists like other new books, but it can still make some rather competitive lists I think. I would have this as more of a list that I want to have fun with and just enjoy the impressive look and fun fluff aspects. I would have my separate more competitive list for tougher tourny and big games that I am looking to just win.
But I do agree with MoS. Its a cheap and usefull mark and can fit with this fluff well. Since Malal is such a horrifying god and his followers are motivated by pure hatered for chaos, it makes sense for them to hold strong against arrow fire and fear/terror units. Ive been coming up with a lot of ideas for the fluff behind units and whatnot. I will hopefully post a list and some rough draft fluff for yall to look at and critiqe before this weekend.
I just think that as I work on my main competitive list I am going to save bits and whatnot to use for this lil project. I really think having a well done Malar model would look great and a warshrine has a lot of potential to be a model that brings others to the table and draw a lot of complementary responses. A chariot pulling a caged and unplucked Lord of Change, or a dramatic crucified bloodthirster would be rather jaw-dropping if done well.
Ok I decided to procrastinate studying a little longer and decided to make up a list and write down the ideas I had right now. Its just a rough draft and an outline on the unit but I just want to see what yall give as feedback on what I have so far. So here it goes.
Exalted Hero- 269
-Flail and shield
-Banner of the Gods
15 warriors (The Souless)- 270
-hand weapon and shield
24 marauders (The Horde)- 154
-LA, hand weapon and shield
Marauder Horsemen (Horde Riders)- 91
3 Dragon Ogres (Malal’s Children)- 231
Warshrine (The Crucifixion)- 140
This isn’t an elaborate fluff story yet but here are my thoughts for a rough draft on justifying these units.
Kholek is being used to model Malal and his god-like power. The statline and base size fit a character of his magnitude I believe. Thinking about it more the only issue I see fluff wise is this guys lightning armor and lightning attack. I was thinking for the attack that I can say it is not lightning, but rather a whisper that sends chills down the enemy’s spine and causes them to insanely jolt or attack one another violently with extreme strength. Something along those lines I think could work. As for the armor Im not sure. Im thinking maybe Malal protects his followers and sucks in magic energy to protect them and fuel his rage. But since its only lightning attacks he does this with it may seem odd. Maybe something about how the lightning has no effect on him and rather stimulates him and causes him to gain an adrenaline rush (frenzy)
This warrior unit is one that has been recruited by Malal. Warriors who have most likely fallen in battle and left on the battle field. Malar is known for searching chaos battle fields in search for wounded soldiers who are near death. He finds them and gives them the opportunity to be revived and brought back to strength and in return they must follow him unquestioning with full devotion. These warriors give their soul to Malar in a similar way that can be looked at as a person selling their soul to the devil (I don’t have weird religious beliefs or anything, Im just trying to use a similar metaphor that I think you all can correlate to this situation). These “soulless” warriors are then revived to strength and their armor rejuvenated with the symbols and markings of their new patron god.
These are the men who come to Malal out of pure hatred for chaos. Fathers and husbands who have had their cities or villages pillaged and destroyed by chaos forces. They have lost everything including their wives and children and have such a strong hate for chaos that they are willing to devote the rest of their lives to get their revenge on those who have taken all that is dearest to them. These are not the strongest, toughest or most skilled soldiers (represented in the average level statline marauders have) but they are willing to give their lives in support of this vengeful cause.
These men are similar to those of “The Horde.” The only difference is they have experience riding horses in their past and are given steeds by Malal to fill this skill and allow them to use it in the field of battle.
Malal does not only seek out the help of common soldiers and hateful countrymen to fill his ranks, he also seeks those that have had command in chaos forces. “Malal’s Children” are past chaos exalted champions. Champions that have fallen from grace. Either because they have fallen in battle or have become unworthy in the eyes of their original god or gods. These champions that were doomed to the life of a spawn were found out by Malal and given a second chance. Malal saved them from that horrible existence of a spawn and revived them, and granted these highly skilled warriors with mutations, weapons and abilities superior to the rest of his followers (DOs model this with high wounds, speed, and GWs). The process to spawndom did however cause this reviving process to not be fully effective though (demonstrated by the mere 4+ save). These warriors are large and help Malal keep order in his horde. They are the elite fighters that Malal relies on. (These are dragon ogres, but will be heavily converted into a large warrior looking creature with heavy mutations to fit the fluff of this army).
This war shrine will be modeled as a chariot holding a crucified bloodthirster. It will be the centerpiece to the army and will provide the followers with a rallying point that they can see from across the field to remind them of the horrors they fight against and the cause that they fight for.
No cool name yet but heres what I got. He is simply a casualty of war much like the Soulless and provides Malal with magic. Through the twisted teaching of Malal he has learned ways of repelling even the strongest of spells (scrolls to handle those deadly gateways), and has learned the dark arts of death (lore of death) to use against his old allies. (With only 3 PD he wont do much damage but oh well. He is mainly there for defense)
Once again no name L. This guy is made to be Malal’s right hand man. A model carrying a banner (hopefully another crucifixion of probably some sort of demon). The banner of the gods is meant to keep order in the ranks of Malal’s horde and once again keep order.
Instead of using Malal himself why not base the army around Kalab Daark who is meant to be his champion and then working in ogres to list as if i remember correctly Skraag the Slaughter was meant to have been linked with Malal in various ways. Good look though its a nice idea.
One thing to reccomend is banner of the Gods, while is amazing is as you know very very expensive, So I dont see how it can be used to a full benefit without being held by an exalted on a disk, or at the very least a horse. You need to be able to put it where its going to be important (like near the Dogres) and ive found the setup of
Exalted, MoT, Disk, BSB, BannerOfTheGods, Flail, Shield, (mabie BloodCurdRoar)
To be as a optimal for using the banner (getting some shooting attacks) and if you HAVE to, charge a flank with 5 str 7 attacks.
ps loven the fluff, and for your Dogre conversion, may I reccomend looking at this guys project log, it may be somthing to shape your guys around
Id love to see some pics when you get your work started as well

In my mind an army of Malal will be overly elite. Warriors, Knights and Chosen, heroes and lords kitted out for magic protection etc.
But thats just me.
"The more choices you force the opponent to make, the better the chance for you to capitalize on his mistakes"
Ya I can see why you say that. Ive been reading up on all the fluff I can find and I cant really find an indication of whether he uses heavy elite forces or a lot of marauder level soldiers. He has a reasonably smaller following which could mean more elite and could be represented on the table like that.
I don't see why you'd have to take a single mark, except that all of your army is going to be painted a single color. If you wanted to though, you could certainly have different marks. I can see reasons for each of the marks--
Slaanesh: Malal demands the most loyal of followings from his men. If Malal tells you to charge a slavering horde of gribbly beasts, you charge a slavering horde of gribbly beasts.
Khorne: Yeah... we hate chaos THAT much, that we're just gonna butcher you all! Or, they're warriors who have lost their minds during whatever event turned them to Malal's favor.
Tzeentch: Malal is a god of seemingly dark and arcane power. His minions slowly fade from existence as he feeds upon their will/soul vampire-like. I can see some of his men being blessed by some of this power (wardsave) or dabbling heavily in his arcana (+1 to cast)
Nurgle: As malal feeds off his folowers, they eventually do become undead, animated by his will and not their own. Nurgle could be the freshly deceased warriors, or warriors who are ghostly and flicker in and out of reality, thus the -1's.
I've thought of running the army as a mounted army too. I would probably use a Daemon Prince for Malal, but that's just me. I want to build a mounted army for a few reasons, but one of them is to give a single, last chance at building a tournament force for WoC. The other is that I like the idea of his most faihful being undead- I play Vampires, and would like to have access to some cheaper blood-knights...
