Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi. I'm interested in a discussion on prons & cons and tactical uses/combos of WoC
magic items and gifts.
I'm starting with magic weapons. Some of my own thoughts and please send your input.
Chaos Daemonsword. Pros:Makes the Lord a killing machine with average +2S and 3-4 extra attacks. Cons: leaves only 25pts for other items(defence). A khorne lord has 6A so rolls of 5 and 6 wasted (max =10A). And of course its possible te get 1 or 2 rolls of 1 and suffer the S+D3 hit!
Hellfire Sword. It's for special tactical uses i think. Flaming attack cancels regeneration and causes double wounds on flammable targets. And on average multiplies to 3 W for each unsaved wound. So good for ogre sized foes (especially trolls), maybe the treeman. Cons: expensive leaves 25pts for other stuff. specialised weapon.Maybe immune to flaming attacks cancels it out (?)
Sword of Change. Maybe i'm missing something but xxpts seems to much for what it does.
Chaos Runesword. A popular choice since at xxpts it gives +1 bonus to WS,A,I. Good for making Lords killing machines, boosting heros to lord level and giving sorcerers a fighting chance. Leaves 50pts which is enough for Lords to take some decent defence.
Berserker Sword. Now it's models on foot only so usually gets an extra 2A maybe 3 if you are lucky. At xxpts im not that tempted given the other options we have.
Aethersword. At xxpts a bit pricy to just negate armour since usually our characters attack with S5,6 or 7 which already reduces saves alot. Maybe a tactical use against armoured knights and with saves 1+ (or better) but T3 (humans).
Rapier of Ecstasy. I cannot make my mind. xxpts and each time you inflict and unsaved wound enemy must pass S test or die. Maybe against a model with S3 or 4 and many wounds? or if it is used in combo with Glaive of putrefaction (by another hero) on a really tough monster/character. So Glaive reduces S to 2 then the hit by the rapier ...
Father of Blades. xxpts and enemy's rolls of 1 hit himself. To be useful the foe must have many A or used with Armour of Damnation. But the combo is 85pts and very defencive. I dont know any ideas?
Axe of Khorne. at xxpts gives +1S and killing blow so it's good for challenges against high armour save enemies.
Filth Mace. Poisoned attacks and if u kill a model u cause Terror for xxpts. I'm not sure. Maybe against low LD armies but the poisoned attacks are useful for low armour high T enemies like sopme monsters. Ideas anyone?
Rending Sword. Re-roll to-wound for xxpts. Seems OK. Probably most useful against high T(4,5 or more) enemies but with low armour
Whip of Subversion. xxpts. if enemy character or monster takes unsaved wound and has not attacked yet this round, then you can make him/it attack its own side. I haven't made my mind yet it's a tactical thing u have to attack before the enemy to make use of re-allocation of attacks. Anybody who used it please comment..
Glaive for Putrefaction. At xxpts if u cause unsaved wound the enemy - at the end of this combat phase -gets S2 & T2 for the rest of the game. Maybe useful if used as a combo with another character who has many attacks or causes multi-wounds. Maybe useful if used by a character with good defence in a killy unit against a hard enemy. U cause a wound, survive the retaliation and next round u and your unit butcher the S2 T2 enemy.

You can also use the glaive followed by curse of the leper, the target would automatically his S or T 1 and die off. Especially nasty if he's in a unit.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
I'm pretty sure posting the individual cost of each magic item is breaching LO's copyright rules.
I would edit your post and take out those costs since anyone posting on this thread probably has the book already and can look up the costs themselves.
"I am the architect of fate!"
I can assure you, that you are completely correct.
I find a lot of the magic weapons work on the basis that S5 is enough, which is most defiantly is not. Especially as the character must challenge. The best Magic weapons I see in the book are
Axe of Khorne
Sword of Might
Sword of Battle
The rest are pretty pointless if your kitting to kill heros. I've been looking at the father of blades armour of damnation combo, for a sorcerer lord lately, but a Chaos lord needs to kill and kill quickly to justify the 250+ he's going to cost. I've found it almost benifical to try and keep him as cheap as possible running
SofM, Barderd Steed, Mof appropriate army, shield, soporific musk. He runs from 284+
