Im new to WoC and Warhammer, just starting and took a real intrest in WoC as my main army. Before i go out and spend a fortune on the models i am making my lists with the aim to be competative but also with some suprises that people may not expect.
I see alot of people go for warshrines while they are good, i have never modeled anything before so dont think i want to start converting things just yet when i havent got the basics right, so i am considering maybe a hellcannon, they look great and on paper atleast i think they seem ok, giving some ranged support that the main army seems to lack on my lists.
My question is this, are they really worth it? I havent yet seen a single list after doing a few days research on here and other sites that field one, and i just wondered if im maybe missing something, My initial idea was to sit a pack of hounds infront of it to stop it running wild (im right in thinking it can shoot over my units following stone thrower rules? and it seems well equiped in melee should anything get to close.
Any advice be great
Thanks in advance
It can work well. I would definitelly say let the hounds run at the enemy though because you acctually want that hellcannon getting pissed and running at the enemy. Check out that things stats. Its unbreakable and has a statline that is not going to fail too often.
The Hellcannon can work really awesome if you are good at guessing ranges. Run a BSB with Doom Totem (-1 on Leadership test if LoS) and make the Panic Tests work even better.
You could also run a Daemon Prince or Sorcerer Lord on Steed with Diabolic Splendour, whose quest is to cast Hellshriek (Panic Tests within 18").
Your opponent will have a really hard time passing all those Ld tests.
Just some ideas...
Giants are a lot more fun for your rare choice imo and its controls are much less random. Giants(especially with slaneesh for always strike first) also have the ability to beat pretty much everything.
I'd say Hellcannon for the rare, or just stack up on spawns. Giants have a habit of turning into pincushions for S3 ranged attacks. Yeah, they roll 6s to wound, but you get no save and they're rolling to hit pretty easily, seeing as how the Giant is large. If you do field a Giant, do it carefully, with lots of terrain, and maybe use 2 Giants so the opponent ends up fighting at least one.

Thanks for the advice Certainly some things i didnt think off here ill play around and see what i come up with, once i decide on a tactic ill post my list in the list forum and see how it goes,
As for sorc on disc v demon prince with lvl 4 magic which is better? I made some rough ideas on paper the main aim was to use him to go behind and take out any pesky sorc/artilary. They both seem about the same points costs once you fully fit them out, im personally leaning towards the demon more as it would hold better in close combat i think (though the sorc would be more heavly armoured)
That has been debated many a times, my friend.
It usually comes down to this:
The best caster is, hands down, the Demon Prince. Flying and Tendrils make him an effective caster; your spells will be cast.
But he's also 150pts more expensive then the Lvl 4 Sorcerer. What can you do with 150 pts to cause some damage? A lot. So, do you need those 150 pts to balance you army?
I personnaly would go with the DP for the incredible casting and the Terror Bomb, unless I was facing ItP armies.

There are a few major differences between the sorc lord and the daemon prince. The thing that makes the daemon prince picked from people is the ability to give him tendrils which allow you to reroll a power dice or dispell dice once per player turn. Tendrils allow him to be able to cast the big infernal gateway with the best chances of landing it, but the downside is since you take the tendrils you lose out on the chance of getting spell familiar. With the daemon prince you have a much less chance of getting infernal gateway in your arsenal which would suck a lot.
So the sorc lord costs about 150 points less, can get spell familiar for a much higher chance at getting gateway, but lacks the tendrils.
Don't expect either your lord or daemon to ever get into combat, they will both just be flying around and casting. IMO the lord is a much better spend.
I love me some Hellcannon. I use one to anchor one of my flanks. It'll pass it leadership roll a little over 80% of the time and if it fails after the first turn, its no big deal. I usually only shoot in the first turn, after that I'm looking for close combat. Its a kick booty tar pit.
