Welcome to Librarium Online!
How many Dragon ogres do you think make the best Anvil? Also as an Anvil Units better to go AHW or GW? Thanks in advance!
Dragon Ogres are more of a hammer unit than an anvil... If you're looking for an anvil unit you should probably be looking at Warriors or something.
What do you mean when you say, 'anvil'. Most times I've heard the expression people are talking about a unit they can encourage their opponent to charge that will hold for a couple of turns so their 'hammer' units can get a flank or rear charge off. Dragon Ogres are more of a 'smash' than a 'hold' unit.
Well Pinkus uses them as an anvil unit. He does use BotG to use them that way but it seems to be working for him.
Idk if DOs are any good as anvils without BotG though.
I know the "normal" way of looking at anvils is to have a group of footsloggers like Marauders or Warriors. However, I prefer to play all cav lists and take the fight to the other side fast. Looking at my options of wanting something faster it leaves me with Ogres, DO's, Trolls, Forsaken, Etc. and After messing around and converting an irongut and cold one to make a DO that was what I wanted to make for the middle part of my army.
What I am looking to do with the Dragon Ogres is basically what you would call an anvil unit, move up the center and hold off the enemy while Knights, Marauders, chariots, giants, etc. come in for the flank charge. Now with this information at hand, what would be a good unit siz to do that? And what should they be equipped with (GW or AHW)?
On my calv list i have tried both group of 3 and 4 and equip them with GW. I would say 3 is better as they can get quite costly. They pack a nasty punch and can somewhat act like an anvil. They are definitely worth taking in a calv list but I dont think they are a primary anvil. They only have a +4 armor save and 4 toughness. They can hold up at least 1 turn against the majority of enemies with the few exceptions. It is easier to make a good anvil unit out of chaos knights with the appriopriate setup.
Well first off I would advise against using forsaken in any army.
But the problem with DOs I see is that they are completely dependant on kills for CR. They cant have a standard, they arent going to outnumber anything, and they are never going to have any ranks. It wouldnt be too tough for a ranked unit to make these guys run if these DOs just run head on into a big block.
We dont really have any fast moving anvils. Now like I said you can make DOs a damn solid anvil with BotG. If you want an anvil from a fast unit you are going to have to get that banner, if not you are going to need to just rely on kills and hammer units down hoping to win combat with kills.
Well rethinking you could make a Slaneesh giant an anvil possibly if you dont use the banner. He wont run but he can die fairly easily.

agree, Dragon Ogores don't seem to be what you would want as an "anvil" in a "Hammer/Anvil" tactic.
They certainly are a great hammer unit, maybe one of the best in all of chaos, right up there with Chaos Knights.
I can't say I have ever seen Dragon Ogres in such a role, either 5th edition or 6th. They certainly are the dreaded hammer to be sure, especially when they are used along with
well, shouldn't dragon ogre discussion be in the BEASTS section?
I wouldn't say so since they have been included in the the new WoC book (something which makes little sense to me but who am i to judge?)well, shouldn't dragon ogre discussion be in the BEASTS section?
Nope GW cleverly gave WoC a new book and just threw in about 5 BoC units one of which being DOs. We got the old BoC units and they are going to get new ones when they get a new book. WoC got hand-me-down units
Dragons ogres not a good anvil? Damn it, just puked in my mouth for the second time today.
What more do you want? T4 FOUR wounds 4+ armor, immune to killing blow. That will gauruntee that most units will take at least 2 turns to kill, if not more. Granted I use Banner of the Gods with them (which leaves something like a 7% chance they'll break from combat), but still. On top of that, they're strength 5, so while being an anvil they're more often than not killing models!
You get 12 warriors with shields and no command for 3 dragon ogres. Bring them naked, fly at the deadliest unit you can find, because again they got amazing movement 7, park your BSB behind them and watch your opponent cuss them out.
Let's see, last tournament I was in with these guys, they held up temple guard until I got my chaos knights into the flank. They charged 20 graveguard with regen BSB and lord and held them for 2 (granted my lvl2 nurgle mage was throwing regen on them like it was going out of style) of his turns, effectively letting me kill everything else he had. They let a keeper of secrets charge them and held for a long time while putting 3 wounds on him. Game 4 I made a mistake with them and game 5 was against beastmen that couldn't pass a leadership test. But they proved to me they are worth their points.
It also was proven to me that the Banner of the Gods is underpriced. Yes I said it. That banner wins games hands down. What ever thing of that price can say that on a consistent basis.
If you're going cav army, go BSB with BotG on Disc and use 3 naked dragon ogres as your anvil.
