I am in a gaming club and am facing off against a good DOC player tomorrow evening. It's a league system where we get to know the 'core' of each others lists (1500 points) and then get to add 750 points to suit the particular enemy you are playing. Total 2250 points
My core list:
Lord on Daemonic mount (placed in Nurgle Knight unit)
5 Knights MoN
6 Knights MoK
18 Marauders with Flails MoS
5 Marauder horsemen with flails MoK
8 Marauder horsemen with throwing axes MoS
2 Sorcerors (placed in Marauder unit)
I usually beef up my Lord according to the enemy, add marks to the sorcerors to suit, add a few doggies and the Hellcannon. I also take an exalted hero with BSB. In the last 3 games he has had the Doom Totem. This in combination with the -1 panic test if the Hellcannon hits has proved very effective. In my 'division' I have played and massacred 2 Orc and Goblin armies and a Lizardman army (with 3 steggies). I also love the Black Tongue/Infernal Puppet combination.
His core list:
Herald of Nurgle on a palanquin with Slime Trail and placed in a unit of 15 Plaguebearers with the Standard of Seeping decay
12 Pink Horrors
12 Pink Horrors
5 Flesh Hounds
5 Flesh Hounds
4 Fiends of Slaanesh
6 Flamers of Tzeentch
I know that as part of his 750 (quite a large part I guess) is that he takes a Greater Daemon. I know it flies so it must be a Bloodthirster, Lord of Change or the keeper of secrets and I'm guessing it's going to be the Bloodthirster.
It strikes me that we don't have much in our arsenal to combat a flying combat freak as powerful as that beast. I could hope form a lucky Hellcannon shot. I could take a couple of spawn to hang around the rear of my lines to discourage him flying over. He has MR of 2 which can be upgraded to MR3 with a magic item so not many spells will get through.
I should say I don't have any monster models (ogres/DO's, or shaggoth). I have a Giant, several spawn, 2 chariots and plenty of Warriors, another Horsemen unit and I can beef up the Knights to be 7 strong each. We don't allow special characters.
Any help much appreciated!
One combo I've found successful against the Bloodthirster is a hero with the glaive of putrefaction. You only need to wound him once and he's pretty much pathetic after that. That, used in conjunction with 2 turns' worth of Curse of the Leper, and you can one-shot that flying cheeseball behemoth. It's very situational, but just hang the unit with the glaive out there in front of the Bloodthirster and ten to one he'll head straight for it.
There's not a lot of thing you can do against a bloodthirster. The hellcanon and glaive of putrefaction are good options. You can also try a slaanesh giant (and cross your finger for a roll a lucky roll). Warriors and rapturous standard could also be useful to tar pit him (although a very costly idea).
Apart from that, those 15 Plaguebearers are just waiting to get a taste of Ecstatic Seizures (T test, 1w with no ward, no regen) but that's going to be difficult.
I know that DoC can be quite a pain to play against. I played a game myself last week and got quite a severe beating, especially because he was running a Greater deamon.
No i don't want to thread jack but since the argument is already on i would like to ask a question to you guys.
While we all worry about bloodthisters we always seem forget The Keeper of Secrets. I think he is as dangerous as a Bloodthirster and i had the opportunity to get a taste pf him for my own. A keeper combined wth a masque and a Bsb (holding a banner which lowers enemies Ld) just doesn't die!.
Now my question is, how do you deal with that!
