Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm currently considering armies for my next army (atm i have tomb kings) and i have a couple chaos questions. I like ogres but don't want to buy another army that will be redone for 7th ed so i'm thinking of chaos with a unit or 2 of ogres thrown in (they also seem a good contrast to my gun line fragile tomb kings).
The questions i have are:
- are chaos ogres worth taking? is it better using up a rare slot and taking DoW ogres instead with bull charge?
- if i do take say 4 chaos ogres do they need great weapons to make back their points or can you just take additonal hand weapons and still have them be effective?
The rough idea i think i'd be looking at for a starting army would be
4 ogres with GW or 2x3 ogres with additonal hand weps
2 chaos spawn.
this should push me up to around 1500 or 2k with geared up lords but is it a relativily effective style of list? The other question is if using models for bloodletters or thirsters from daemons of chaos is what most people use for their daemon prince?
Sorry for the long list of questions thanks for any replies that help
What I would suggest is converting the ogres into dragon ogres which serve a great as a great addition to any chaos army.
Not going to lie, I was going to suggest dragon ogres too. They're faster, stronger, have more wounds and a higher leadership. I run a unit of 3 naked d.ogres and love them.
As far as regular ogres go. They can work. If you're going to outfit ogres to the point of them costing you 200 points, I'd just suggest going with 5 naked chaos knights.
Now if you're deadset with ogres, which there is nothing wrong with that, there are great ways to make them work. Khorne and extra handweapon can give 4 ogres a total of 20 attacks for 190 points. That's not bad. Just use a unit of dogs to screen them.
What you lose by taking DoW ogres is the rerollable panic checks, as well as the 5+ armor save.
I'd say try them out. Ogres are always fun to play with, so I doubt you'll regret taking them.
I would second (third?) the reccommendation for Dragon Ogres. I've used them proxy in a few games and they are just awesome. S 7 w Great weapons, they move as fast as knights and 3 of them in a group have 12 T4 wounds, 4+ Armor (5+ Scaly Skin, LA), and 9 S7 attacks. They have I2, so they don't lose much by taking great weapons.
I am looking at modelling them from DE Cold One knights and Ogre Kingsdom's Ironguts. does anyone have any good links to postings where people have done this kind of thing before?
DO are better IMHO (for all mentioned reasons) but I would never field more than one unit. Ogres and DO are a good addition to knights since they are useful against high T or high Sv enemies.
They're also a cheap way to add wounds to you army. Besides marauders, there's not many ways for around 12 points to add a wound to your army.
mmm thanks for the advice. Does anyone know any good threads or ways of converting up some on the cheap, i don't like the idea of paying $100au for 3 models! In my circle i could probably just paint on some dragonish tatoos to some ogres and say their half dragons or something....
This MIGHT help you
I was using werewolf models that fit my wolf army theme and said they were dragon ogres and not once, even in tournaments did anyone complain.
