Has anyone run this guy in a list? I'd be interested in knowing how well a fully-monster list would work. It'd be more fluffy than competitive, as there couldn't be any magic. But it would surely still be good fun?
Can't speak to a full monster list, but I've run him in games and had mucho fun. :-)
The Mutant Regeneration and his Copious Vomit special rules are particularly fun. By the end of the game Throgg had two different Eye of the God boons on him and was just a combat, wait for it,.... monster :-). Had him in a unit of 3 other trolls and they took on a Wood Elf Treeman. They took it out with their vomit attacks in the second round.
Oh yeah and a breath weapon of vomit... I mean who doesn't love image?
Be aware that if you put him in a unit of Trolls he becomes subject to stupidity. With a Ld of 8 expect him to be stupid at least one round. Also, a unit of 4 trolls can become a little difficult to maneuver. Deploy in a way so they can go straight ahead. ;-)
This is going to be a problem throughout a monster army, I guess. For the points, I think you can hit something like this:
2 units of 4 Trolls
1 unit of 3 Trolls
2 units of 4 Ogres
2 units of 4 Dragon Ogres
2 Dragon Shaggoths
With space for upgrades on models. Ok, you are extremely limited tactically, but that army is based entirely around fluff. Which said, you have 105 wounds and in that army and the lowest toughness on a model is 4. You also have 4+ saves dotted throughout and Regenerate on some models. Then there is your movement - the slowest models are M6. Once they get to the enemy your front line (indeed, your only line!) has 96 attacks with some outrageous strengths.
I don't think it's an army you're likely to win with. But it could be very good fun and it would definitely be worth the look on your opponent's face: "what's he got? I'm betting Knights, a couple solid units of Warriors mixed in with Marauders, lots of screening Hounds and some annoying whizzing Tzeentch heroes. Maybe even a Warshrine or a Chariot. I'll plan for that. Oh, a Troll unit? Hmmm. Wasn't expecting tha... wha?! Anothe... and... what the hell?! Aaaaaargh!!"
and the reroll of Break tests is the icing on the cake... we don't need no stinking BSB! We have Throgg!
Just the idea of Throgg is cool. The army may not be very competetive (thinking shooty death by warmachine) however I love it just for the concept. As soon as I read the special rule, I listened to every song by Finntroll and went on ebay to find troll models (hitting home at $22 each from games workshop, an army of these guys would be more expensive than a normal army. And that's saying something). I kindof lost steam at that point but it's still somthing I would like to see taken to fruition.
