Hi there. I have just started my WOC army and they havenít disappointed me yet. 3 games so far and all of them won by wiping out my opponent to the last man. I run an all cavalry, magic heavy army with a daemon prince and a couple of sorcerers but I am tempted to drop the magic to get more knights and some melee characters. Mainly because I just bought the best looking mini in the entire GW range. That awesome Khorne lord on juggernaut. I guess thatís debateable but it would be a pretty pointless debate since Iím obviously right.
I have heard quite a lot of people arguing that exalted heroes are better point wise then lords and Iím inclined to agree. I just have a bit of trouble in seeing why I should field him at all, pretty face aside. I thought about putting him in a large unit of Khorne knights but he really doesnít bring anything to the unit. He displaces 2 knights so I loose 6 str 5 attacks and 4 str 4 attacks from the mounts. What I gain is 5 str 5 attacks and 3 str 5 attacks from the juggernaut at a higher weapon skill. So I get less attack for at least twice the cost of the knights he displaces. Sure thereís the magic resistance and the slightly increased save but thatís still quite expensive for what you get.
The thing is that he probably wonít be able to handle anything the knights canít handle by themselves. And by leaving him on the shelve you avoid the nightmare of challenges.
SoÖ Am I missing something? Do I run him by himself? He canít reliably take any unit without help and heís not really great at warmachine hunting or flanking due to frenzy. Perhaps with a unit marauder horsemen?
Heís going to have a permanent place in my army no matter what since he was one of the main reasons I bought this army. It would just be nice to have him do something besides looking good.
I myself am considering getting that model, because as you say, it looks kickass!.
If you really want your lord to add something to your unit it might be worth running him as a Chaos Lord as this will give you an additional leadership, and will allow for some seriously badass combinations that shouldn't make you afraid of getting him into challenges.
Personally I like this build.
Chaos Lord on Juggernaut
Axe of Khorne
Word of Agony
This guy should be able to go toe to toe with most other characters, and since he negate the enemy magic weapon, there is little that can threaten him.
Just make sure you screen him effectively, and it might be needed to run him in a unit of 8 Knights to really ensure the enemy run away, and to get a good change of outnumbering and fear breaking.
I love the jugger model, but I have yet to muster up the want to have a frenzied hero/lord and even a frenzied knight unit. It is too risky imo. They can be baited and ignored far too easily.
Frenzied makes these guys super killy and anything they tough will blow up instantly, but is it necessary? Our heros and knights are already badass. Why risk having them do nothing to get extra killy ability that wont be needed in a lot of cases. People will say screen them but if an enemy sees a super unit of frenzied knights that count for 25%-35% of your army, they will find a way to nullify it if they are any good.
Some people do love khorne though so to each there own. I just like to have control over my army. Id rather lose because I didnt get enough damage done rather than chase a bird around the table with a solid percentage of my army.
I love the korne jugger character.... wouldn't go in a battle without it.
I have two things that make me want to field him:
Fluffy reason: I think chaos isn't chaos when it isn't led by a great character. When I field my army and my enemy would need to guess who my leader is, he would be chosen. the way the model looks adds something to the army (like you said before).
Gaming reason: I field 5 korne knights with only a banner, joined by my korne character on a jugger. He has the sword of might and enchanted shield.
Like you said....He replaces 2 knights worth of 6 S5 attacks + 4 S4 attacks. He gives me 5 S6 attacks + 3 S5 attacks. He gives magic resistance 1/1 extra unit strenght AND he has a far better WS + -1 armour save. Well This is one easy coise for me.
Disadvantages: he costs more and the units becomes quit wide (though I never had any problems with it jet).
Okey, you said. He doesn't add much to the unit. Almost every army has one unit with a good fight hero/lord in it. I would think twice to engage with 6 knights. Because his lord would at least hit me on a 3+. He would probbely have S6 or higher with 3 to 5 attacks. This could mean I loose a lot of knights and perhaps lose the combat.
With an unit of knights + jugger hero, I would engage this enemy unit gladly. My hero can match most other characters, so I don't need to fear getting smashed straight away. Off-course there are exceptions. Death star units e.t. Super lord or special characters???..... But in all my battles I've played I never thought...... Man, I wish I didn't field this character......... The looks on my enemies faces when he charges his units is worth every point I paid for him alone
Lastly, it is very personnal if you like him. Some people don't like it. Mostly because he is korne. And we all know what trouble frenzy can bring us.
But I see a lot of people fielding a jugger hero. be it in an unit or by himself.
I'd recommend fielding him in 1 or more battles. See how he works for you.
Just an opinion of a korne player..........
