Welcome to Librarium Online!
So the other day while browsing the warriors of chaos army book (for know thy enemy more or less) I'm thinking about making a 2250 army list that basically won't change, because after reading the Infernal gateway spell I went OMG! Then Got to thinking...
How to make a tooled up sorcerer lord that should always get the spell, and should always get it off (aside from miscasts which are exceptions that I know occur) So I'm thinking a Lvl4 Tzeetch sorcerer lord on a dragon, with a spell familer (or power familier forget the name right now but the extra spell one) so there's a 1.5% chance he doesn't get gateway. other than that really, and knowing how stupid it is to invest all your points in one character (but its for fun really)
What would you give him in terms of gifts and magic items, not to mention is it wise to do this (i think we all know the answer to that) but still.
Thanks in advance.
I used a Tzeentch Sorcerer Lord yesterday against Vampire Counts, both of us ran rather magic heavy, so neither of us really had that successful magic.
In 6 turns I managed to get 2 gateways off (2 where dispelled by scrolls, 1 was a miscast), one hit some skeletons for 6 s3 hits (lol, and i cast it at IF to further annoy me), and the second one hit his Vampire Lord with 5 Black knights for 9s8 hits killing his unit and taking his Vampire down to 1 wound.
So while Gateway is good you can't really count on getting it off alot, unless you run a Daemon Prince with Tendrils, it won't be that devastating against an enemy that has alot of magic.
(on the plus side his vampire lord died turn 1 from Black tongue - Infernal Puppet , but I decided to be nice and make it a S6 hit to him and his unit, since we just spend forever setting up, so in the end we considered it a Draw since I lost in the end.)
My Sorcerer Lord looks like this.
Disc of Tzeentch
Book of Secrets
costing 350 pts.
against shooty enemies he will be further kitted up. But for those points he is pretty good and normally he should survive the fight. Mind you not as good point denial as a DP.
you can never be 100% sure of getting Gateway unless you run Villitch.

I would say the blood of TZ would help you more, you're still not guaranteed to get gateway, but throwing 4 dice at it, with the blood of tz, gives you a chance to turn that '2' into a 5-6 or something. Of course it could create a miscast moment as well.
DP with tendrils is the only thing that really has a chance of getting gateway off reliably and he really helps with defense as well, but is quite a bit more expensive.
Hmmm That's the issue isn't it. I Thought about making him resilient as all hell by giving him regen, good armour and ward save, and at least +1 to cast. But I see your points...
Why would Villich be able to get it off reliably? He's still a Lvl 4, although he does get extra power dice for each unsuccessful dispel attempt I'll give you that.
Villitch will not be able to get it off reliably, but he will atleast be certain to get the spell since he know all of the lore of Tzeentch.
Against VC however he will be very effective as most VC players use 1 dice alot, resulting in more dispel dice to help villitch stop the rest.
I prefer to run a Sorcerer Lord, but the fact in a Game with one lord choice means if he is the general, His leadership is not that great. I would not put him on a dragon in games under 3k. Simply because he will cost anywhere from 25-30 percent of your army and is just too big a points sink. Book of Secrets and Power or Spell familar are great, combine it with the infernal puppet, and you wont have to worry that much about getting sucked into the realm of chaos for rolling a 2 on the miscast table. Gateway is indeed an excellent spell, but many times, not worth the casting.
I find Flickering fire far better, though taking mutliple tzeentch wizards with flickering fire might also work. Infernal gateway is a great way to make your opponent eat up dispel scrolsl or dice. I personally like Treason of tzeentch, though that wont work. Pandemonium+Baleful Trasnmografacation is an excellent combo. Makes them have to use their gimped LDR and not a Characters. They will more than likely fail and take wounds. (Is suddenly thinking of skeletons turning into animal skeletons)
I havent used villicth myself, as I prefer to make my own lords and heroes Item like golden eye of tzeentch on a Disc sorcerer makes him very hard to kill with shooting.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
This comes up quite a bit, for me tried and tested best setup I have found is
Sorceror Lord, MoT, Golden Eye Tz (3+ Ward vs shooting & Magic Missiles), enchanted shield (1+ armour sv), Spell Familiar (5 spells), Dispel Scroll, Blood curdling Roar (2d6 str1 no AS shooting attack)
But I think support is key, so I also run
Lv 2 MoN Book Secrets, Power Familliar (PD goes to the lord)
Lv2 MoN Puppet
IMO you really need nurgle support to threaten key characters with bubboes, which will draw out scrolls and dispel dice. This allows your Lord to have a stronger phase. I would rather have the points in extra magic support, rather than a dragon. Well thats what I have found anyway.
