Alright I don't want to tick anyone off so if I posted this in the wrong area please tell me so I can move it.
I am looking to start playing Warhammer Fantasy, but I can't make up my mind which army to go with. I was gonna play High Elves, but since I play Eldar, this seems rather redundant to me. I saw the Warhammer Battle March trailer a while ago, and really liked the look of the Chaos (Warriors?).
Anyway I was wondering if you guys could give me a quick summary of the fluff (this is very important to me) and the tactics that pertain to the Warriors of Chaos. I understand the Chaos gods and the fact that the forces of Chaos have recently been divided by Games Workshop. Mostly I'm looking for a description of why you play Warrior of Chaos.
Well, fluff-wise the Warriors of Chaos is probably my favorite army. Initially, I was turned off by the Chaos armies because (coming from an older 40k background, regrettably) I was used to Chaos armies being all doom-and-gloom mindless, selfish killing machines, and I didn't want to look like a 10-year old who still thinks wearing t-shirts with skulls and dragons on them is cool. Once I actually picked up the WoC book, however, I was really fascinated with the entire army.
Basically, think of them as a mixture of Pre-Historic Britain, Dark Ages Scandinavia, and Medieval Mongolia. Think marauding hordes whose culture is based on courage, strength, and personal achievement, not necessarily mindless violence. Geographically, the WoC mostly populate the cold, Northern portion of the world, and regularly raid the southern territories for riches, food, or just to please their gods in battle.
WoC has some of the strongest martial characters in the game, and IMO the best-looking heavy and light cav. The army list is insanely versatile, easily lending itself to a formidable horde army, a hard charging (but glass jaw) all-cav army, a solid and small elite force, or a domineering magic list.
That being said, I wouldn't rule out High Elves out of hand. The only similarities between HE and Eldar are pointy ears and expensive, elite units. The High Elves mostly keep to themselves, and generally only go to battle to defend their homeland. They don't see themselves as the rightful heirs of the galaxy (and also said galaxy's personal police force) the way that the eldar do. The true Warhammer equivalent to Eldar, fluff-wise, is probably closer to Lizardmen. I don't think the High Elves really have a 40k equivalent; their closest match is probably Tau if you take away the whole dominate the galaxy aspect.
I started with WoC BASED ON APPEARANCES ALONE! SKULLS AND DRAGONS ARE COOL!!!!!!
But I've grown up with the buggers and I have to say I enjoy teir strait-forward approach. That is, they approach strait at you and if you get in the way it's going to hurt. But they have done a wonderful job making the list a little more flexible so it's not just a walk across the table, you can pull out a few mean tricks/combos that you won't see anywhere else.
When I look at every figure of my army (xept for my Nurgle sorcerer, he's not cool... Hounds aren't that cool either) I say to my self:
"OmG thats just so f***ing awesome!"
and I think that is the most important factor playing a race. The backdraw is when they die, you seem to have some kind of relationship to your 300-350 pt expensive unit (without a character)
I like to think of the WoC as the Vikings of Scandinavia (mostly Denmark - f*** Sweden/Norway ^^) who's values, as Shakedown47 stated, is based on honour, strength and devotion to the gods
I am 22 years old and i still wear t shirts with skulls and dragons, my room is still covered in images of demons and vampires, even my ear ring has a skull on it....They are cool.
However chaos aere something else. They are Chaos. They are the army which can do anything and has a reason to be anywhere in the world of warhammer. They fight everyone and have a reason to do it.
It is the army which will never lose fluff wise as the gods of chaos win battles even when they lose them...
As long as there is bloodshed - KHORNE THRIVES
As long as there is pestilence and affliction - NURGLE SMILES
As long as people commit carnal sins and betray each other - SLAANESH IS SATISFIED
And if sorcerers and mages still delve in magic - TZEENTCH GETS POWER
This shows that fluff wise, Chaos always wins.
Also the models are amazing, and you can rest assured that anytime GW issues a new edition they cjaos will still be there and the will continue getting those awesome models, since chaos is the most popular army produced by GW.
Also there is great space for model conversion and painting. You can use models from any army and convert it to chaos and you always have a good reason...This is chaos it corrupts any and everyone! Even the Archaon everchosen was once a priest of the empire sworn to the destruction of CHaos...he soon changed his opinion when hhe saw the might of chaos.
Gaming wise, chaos ives you a large choice of units and gaming styles. They arent an all trashing army and you still need tactics in order to do well.
Well maybe I hit a nerve there with the skulls and dragons comment...I was only trying to paint a picture there, not singling anyone out or anything. I'm nearly 28, at 28 dragons and skulls either aren't cool or I'm behind the curve
Also, Draag brings up a good point. Chaos warriors and daemons are basically the space marines of Warhammer fantasy, in that they will always be solidly in the heavy rotation schedule. That might mean less time between books (and therefore rules changes) than some other armies, but it also means tons of cool new models.
Look at the warrior model how cool is he? Oh and he brough all his other cool friends. An army with some of the best profiles in the game who wouldn't like to have that? make the whole world tremble when they come storming down from the chaos wastes. My signiture is one of the only things u will need to no Buy the army book for full details =P
Seriously thebackround is some of the coolest i've ever read and i read A LOT of the army books.
This is great! Very helpful stuff this, I'll buy the army book and start planning out my horde. Thanks again all.
