with Throgg as a hero is it any good to have trolls as core choices in a 2000pt army? if so what unit size would you recommend? i'm starting my first chaos army and i really like the idea of using trolls as part of my core, any suggestions of what units would complement trolls? i really like the chaos warrior and knights models, though they're expensive.
I don't think I would refer to the chaos warriors and knights models as expensive as compared to anything, but especially not to trolls. Units of 3 or 4 trolls are what is commonly seen, and those are going to run you $60-$80 per unit, while a unit of knights cost $25
Trolls can be great fun, but they will only hit anything but undead half the time and have no rank bonuses, standards, etc. for combat res. If you aren't into using marauders, that means your combat res can only come from flank charges (not always able to pull off) or ranked units of warriors (pricey.)
I roll with 3 troll plus throgg and then 2 units of warriors as my core and do well with it.
what size do you make your warriors units?
i'm not against using marauders, i just prefer the warriors models. i've been looking through the book and its difficult to make a fair sized army with most of the unit choices and not be small.
i'm used to having to take large units to not be overrun with rats when fighting my friends skaven so small units are pretty alien to me, i dont know what numbers would work to be effective and not too small
2 units of 15 warriors of nurgle, one with shields other with halberds Full command 300 pts a unit plus any magic banners you want to add. (I add Banner of Rage to halberd unit). It provides a strong center to the army, and fairly impervious to missile fire except war machines.
I think warrior units, if they are going to be the static CR in your army, need to be 15 minimum. 20 would be even better, but you're cutting down on your other unit options when you have that much invested in a few units. I like units of 20 personally, but only in very large games (4000 +.)
Nurgle is probably my least favorite mark, but it may be the best here to get the best mileage out of those low numbers.
I think you underestimate nurgle, -1 WS can be very nice. WS 3 ppl hit my warriors on 5's. I agree units of twenty would give them much more resilient to drawn out combats however its not that feasible unless youre looking into doing a semi deathstar army, which imho could work well with chaos.
i think 15 warriors a unit is fine for 2000pts. the mark of Nurgle would definately be useful on them, though Tzeentch is my favourite god.
do you do a single god army or use different marks for different units?
I try to do mono nurgle since my whole army is painted in a green color scheme but it does limit me somewhat. For example nurgle doesn't have any good mounts where that disc of tzeentch looks very useful.
