Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been getting some great feedback for my other questions so I have another topic for you guys.
I have been recently playing a few games in our local league and I have found myself playing against High Elves pretty frequently. I have tried a few things, magic heavy, magic light, heavy armor, forget armor. So far I am not having a whole lot of success. I seem to get beat pretty significantly every time. Granted the guy rolls like a champ but I am wondering what strategies and tactics have worked well for you guys against this army in the 2-3k range of game play.
I have found success with Knights if I get the charge, my magic phase when I went full magic seemed to be marginally successful though anything less then full out was unsuccessful, and the Hellcannon seemed to be 'ok'.
Some things I am concerned with primarily is how to defeat the 7wide group of Swordmasters when you can't seem to get a flank on them. How to survive against bolt throwers ((every game defaults to a large hill in both starting zones so dogs have not helped at all in addition he always grabs this 3 story building during terrain deployment))
He typically fields a cavalry unit with that banner that adds d6 to combat res, I try to snipe that with my casters, he also always has a large block of phoenix guards that are hard to crack.
The obvious answers to ASF seem to be use shooting to stop them, as they are low on armor and toughness, but obviously our options are rather limited, and everytime I have opted for fast cav they have been mowed down by ranged before they got into any action.
I'm sure there has to be a way to be competitive with this army, I'm just not sure how to hit it yet, it might be a matter of deployment strategy or it could be list building. I'll take tips for anything. Thanks in advance.
I found the Hellcannon to be the best thing to deal with those knights. Not by shooting, but for COMBAT
He's T6 and unbreakable with 5 wounds, as long as he doesn't get the charge he's going to have a Hard time killing it. the thing can charge 12", so If you can bait the knights close enough to charge them, then he'll sit there with them for the rest of the game, negating the unit entirely.
Swordmasters are just gross. shots from the hellcannon would work nicely, tho not many of our troops come to mind that coud have an easy time with them. a Unit of Chosen with the favour of the gods on the champ and a warshine backing it up could be helpful; 2 rolls on the eotg can potentially make these guys really nasty.
A good setup for a character is an XC of Tzeech on a disc with the golden eye and a flail/shield (or enchanted shield). He'll have good armour and ward against shooting attacks and can really, really hurt in combat without the flail. With the flail he can 1shot chariots and really put a hurt on knights.
They key with HE is to survive and hit back harder then he hit you. maraders and horsemen are rather useless. The only way i may use them is to put the mark of slaneesh on them and have them bodygaurd my casters.
I normally fous focus highly on magic when facing high elves seeing as most bring dragons, which limit their magic power.
Slaanesh magic in particular works wonderfully against t3 high elves and the #6 spell will draw out alot of dice. In 3k I normally run Villich and a Lvl 4 Slaanesh sorcerer with spell familiar, ensuring I get all the spells I need. After Seizures on his princes or swordmasters make sure you get a gateway off on his dragon and finish off with pandaemonium to close down his magic. this is also the perfect counter to teclis. In addition to two lvl 4's i normally bring a buboes toting Nurgle sorcerer, just to draw out 3 dispel dice early in the magic phase.
I use a big unit of warriors (18, halberds and shield, MOS) to hide my lvl 2 and Villich, and armed with a raptorous standard the unit stands a very very good chance of standing, even when charged by a dragon. These will be able to take on nearly everything the elves can throw at you.
A good counter to dragon princes is to have a unit of Nurgle knights with banner of rage take a charge from dragon princes, just make sure you direct as many attacks as you can on the BSB, to make sure he won't benefit from his BSB with battle banner. Slaanesh magic can help you ensure you get to charge them or be charged.
As have been suggested earlier in this thread, the BSB on a disc with a flail and some protection (I use armor of Morrslieb) is very handy for dealing with his Repeaters, I give mine Blood curling roar and managed to kill teclis with this.
Most high elf players will try to march block you, and I normally deploy a unit of horsemen around 8 inch behind my main battle line, that can deall with these eagles. Atleast the ones trying to get to my infantry in the center.
A giant can be very helpful too and alot of High elves will have a very hard time getting it down once it gets close. This can also help to divert some shooting away from your knights and dragon ogres.
A Hellcannon is also a very effective anvil, that can tie up one of his nastier units once it rampages towards him (which it will, mine always does). The shot will wound all elves on 2+ making it outright scary, and the panic will eventually cause some failed panic tests.
ASF while nasty, isn't really a big problem for our high armor save, high toughness troops and you just have to accept that it doesn't matter who charge.
Hope this helps, if not ask and I will clarify more
Well, Horsemen with Throwing Axes are quite nice (especially against High Elf Elite Infantry); Marauder infantry admittedly has to be enforced by some Exalted with the Helm of many Eyes (to cut down a bit of his first rank so that you can overwhelm him by static CR) even if this got a bit more insecure with the new book (having lost the stupidity re-roll by the undivided mark and the ini value of the exalted went down one point, too)marauders and horsemen are rather useless
It ain't easy bein' green... :-)
Thank you everyone I got a lot of good pointers in there and I will be sure to check them out when putting together my next game against him.
I'm about to post another topic talking about how to combat a full caster DE list. I am thinking that I have two options, either match him by going all out magic and then letting my CC mop up when I get in there, OR I can go no magic (maybe a scroll caddy) and just go with MR on all my builds.
Watch out for swordmasters. Ive had a unit of swordmaster cleave through a unit of chosen worth twice as much because of ASF+great weapons
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
