Hey guys & girls.
As my first post here, i could really use some advice against Skaven.
Im gonna play 3000 pts. against Skaven on Friday, and it's my first time against em, and only my 3rd game with my new cool WoC army.
I know the Skaven player is gonna have 1 warplightning cannon, around 2x5 or 3x5 jezzails and 3 to 4 weapons teams, what can i do against all that shooting?
Is there any units i should be affraid of?
Im thinking about going with a fighty lord on a dragon is that a bad character choice against skaven??
But any helpfull tips is welcome so throw em at me.
PS: Great forum you got here.
I'd take warriors with additional hand weapons and MoK, knights and anything else you can get that cause fear and unload alot of attacks. The roar gift of chaos (forget it's name, does afew d6 st1 hits) can also be useful to clear out some rats. Basically anything that can do large amounts of hits and wounds vs weak troops. A hellcannon would also be nice against his large blocks.
hhhmmm that's not the best skeven list out there...especially at 3000! I'd only worry if he had the bell. Sure Jezzails are nasty but they're the least of your worries when it comes to skaven. (contradiction I know) Personally the one WOC list that's given my skaven trouble, of course this was at the 1250 level, was an all mounted cavalry list devoted to tzeentch (extra chance to pass a failed save with the ward.) i forget the exact list but it was something like this...
2x exalted hero
1Xlvl 2 sorcerer (the infernal puppet)
2X5man maurader horsemen
2X5man chaos knights (as mentioned of tzeentch)
Game ended up being a draw but it's some food for thought...
Personally I would try to go for the Psychology approach (good topic about it on LO: http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...sychology.html (Unconventional Focus - Psychology)) and take a lot of fear/terror causers (hellcannons ftw?), doomtotem, maybe a filth mace on a non-dragon Exalted? And of course the Slaaneshi magic. In the past I might have underestimated this kind of magic, but it really has it's merits in a situation like this one.
And like outbrak said, lots and lots attacks.
If you have warhounds use some of them to screen your knights from jezzails. On turn two you should be charging in with some buffed up knights and ready to tear him to pieces.
Think im gonna try out slaanesh magic, so i can make him take some LD test. And think im gonna try with a hellcannon like Smallerdeamon said, and add a shaggoth on top of that.
in case you're still open for ideas, a nurgle force would be the monster of the day.
that skaven army sounds like a big force, so get as many fear and terror causing unit as you can (eg, spawn, ogres, trolls, giants, knights, you know the ones). daemon has my vote on the psychology card, as skaven would likely flee on at the sight of warriors, never mind dragons and the like.
make your front-line troops mark of nurgle though. the beauty of this is that it's -1 to hit anyone with the mark, at least narrowing your own losses whilst your gribblies get to work on scaring the skaven, making them flee and, fairly likely, causing a panic spree amongst his ranks.

Mark of Nurgle:
"When rolling to hit against a model with theMark of Nurgle, the attacker suffers -1 to its
Ballistic Skill and Weapon Skill, to a
minimum of 1."
That does not always equate to a -1 to hit.
Even more for that matter, pay attention to the fact that the guy posted and didn't have another post till your necromancy for more than a month.
Played against Skaven in 2250 list, I either killed or made flee everything save 1 ratling and 1 gutter runner. I will say this, HAND WEAPONS AND SHIELDS. Most skaven units will bounce off shieldwalls. I was attacked from in front and behind and still won combat. I had to be attacked from 3 sides and whiff on my turn to be broken. MoT also works pretty well.
What got me was how my unit of tzeentch knigths with the Tzeentch hero was reduced to the hero and Standard bearer knight, So I decided to go out in a blaze of glory and charge the Grey seer on Bell. That one woarrior with Chaos runesword broke a unit of 25 Skaven clan rats with Seer on bell, in range of BSB. I say the hero because there was nothing left for the Knight to kill when they went by Initiative, I then ran the unit down. But yea if you want a cheap alternative to Nurgle, go for tzeentch. You'd be surprised how often you can make a 6++ ward. Thats if you fail a 2+ parry.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
