Ok, so I'm fairly split between taking my character on a dragon as a lord or a sorceror lord. Right now it can go either way but it had me thinking of all the devious combos you can make up in regards to having a dragon mounted lord. So lets see what kind of fiendish dragon mounted lord/sorc lord combinations you guys have come up with.
I present the Master Blaster:
Sorcerer Lord on Dragon
book of secrets
(I usually then give him regen)
blood curdling roar
and the 1 use breath weapon
Give a support caster a power familiar and a 2nd the infernal puppet
This gives your 1 model 8 casting dice and 6 spells. 2 breath weapons with a 3rd as a one time use only. And then you also get the Roar. Don't worry about miscasting, because any of the values from 2 to 7 can easily be turned into something that won't hurt your sorcerer much if at all.
The reason I do this, is because I find a Lord on dragon is overkill. Yeah he works wonders, but he's expensive and can only be in 1 spot. The sorcerer dominates the magic phase and then can breath the crap out of rank and file.

In my latest army iteration I'm probably going to be using a sorc lord something like this...
Sorc Lord, lvl 4, Nurgle, Spell Familiar, Collar of Khorne, Enchanted Shield, Dispel Scroll, Bloodcurdling Roar, Chaos Dragon
Comes in at a whopping 750 points (ouchie :/)
however, has the shooting phase goodness like pinkus' one (except for the one use breath weapon gift, but as you can only use one or the other per turn its no big deal) has the collar or khorne + enchanted shield for defence (MR(2), 1+ armour save and 6+ ward for sorc 3+ armour save for dragon)
And its just ripe for RGR bombing (D6 SD6 hits with no armour save to all enemy within 12") and short range plague squall shots (3D6 S1 no armour save, fired as stone thrower) AND he can give himself regen (if he gets the spell ofc)
again, this is backed up by a secondary caster with a puppet
Cannons are a worry, but when aren't they I am tempted to swap the collar for the golden eye which is essentially the decision between MR(2) and a 4+ ward vs missiles
I wouldn't take golden eye of tzeentch as the ward save won't transfer to your dragon and the majority of the fire will hit your dragon. Additionally it seems to be a common theme for HE or other armies to take lore of beasts and try to beast cowers on the dragon all the time in which case MR 2 will be very nice.
As for pinkus build idk if the sorc lord really needs six spells. Instead i would consider swapping the book of secrets onto the support mage and put the power famil on the sorc lord. This will give him 5 spells in his chosen lore, so he will have know most all the spells, and the lvl 2 wiz will atleast have 3 spells giving him more options. Also take the one use breath weapon off as its really not that good and not worth 20 pts.
