Alright I am starting Warriors of Chaos and I have a couple questions this will help me decide what I want to buy. I have already purchased the Battalion and a package of M. Horsemen. What I want to know is this.
1) How will Wulfrik the Wanderer do with a group of 25 Marauders that use his special ability of coming on anywhere?
2) Would you take 2 groups of M. Horsemen with Flails, Light Armour, Musc, and Std Bearer or would you take a group of naked knights (very close to same points cost.
3) If you do not use warhounds will my army be in trouble? There are other things I want the 60 points for.
4) What Lores do you take and why? (Basic Army) Also if I want Nurgle or Tzeenetch I have to take the 20pt mark first or can I just choose that lore and not get the +1 for casting with tzeenetch?
5) How is your experience with Chaos Spawns? Random Movement and Atks, be funny but how effective?
6) How do I buy Forsaken? Or is it something I have to convert?
7) I promise this is the last one. Chariot or Warshrine?
Thanks in advance!!
Armies: 40k: Imperial Guard, Orks Fantasy: Skaven
1) Dont like to use special chars, so no comments on this one.
2) Both. But I wouldnt take standards for mounted marauders. Thats easy 100 points for the enemy.
3) Hounds (6 of them) are required for each knights unit. Unless those knights are tzeench, and with banner of ward vs shooting.
4) Nurgle is probably the most powerfull. But all of them can be used. You have to take the mark, if you want to use particular lore.
5) Mostly used to protect flanks/rear vs skirmishers. Work better with infantry lists.
6) You dont. They are utter waste of points. Unless you really want them for fluff reasons. In which case you convert them.
7) Chariot if you run infantry. Shrine if you run chosen.
Be what you are I tell myself. And myself tells me we can't be anybody else (c)DP
I agree with pretty much everything Galakhad said. I don't care for special characters either, but yes Wulfrik would be awesome with 5 static CR. If you feel that the characters you can create and outfit aren't "special" enough to you, you certainly could do worse than Wulfrik.
Fast cav can be insanely useful to an army that relies on getting into combat, so if I had to choose between two units of horses and a unit of knight, especially naked knights, I'd go with the horsemen every time. On a similar note, warhounds may not be the most exciting unit visually or fluff-wise, but if you ever end up playing a game where you didn't think they were worth those 60 points, you let me know.
Lore of death is probably my favorite Lore, because to me it is the most useful in a tournament setting. It doesn't do anything spectacular against undead or daemons, which of course are plentiful, but Doom and Darkness is simply amazing. Unless you're taking Banner of the Gods, which quickly becomes not fun for both you and your opponent, a Warriors army relies on winning combats and running people down. That means people failing break tests consistently, especially Stubborn troops. And as Galakhad said, you have to take the corresponding Mark to get access to a certain Lore.
If you have the points and rare slots for 2 Spawn, they can be very useful. They can also be worthless. It depends on the army you're playing against and how lucky you get. Generally I find that they are useful more often than not, and once or twice they have been game winners by tying up large infantry blocks or nasty cav for a few turns. MoS is the only one worth taking, IMO.
Forsaken, unless you're interested in them for fluff purposes, are almost totally useless. In unit sizes bigger than 10 they will cost you more per person than a unit of Khorne warriors with extra hand weapons, and even then you know that the Khorne warriors A) will always get 4 attacks have a better armour save C) can take command, and therefore more CR, and D) don't take one of your special slots. The only downside is less movement, but if you need fast, hard-hitting troops, take a unit of Ogres instead. If you want skirmishers to tie up your enemies' units, take a unit of flail-wielding Khorne marauders.
I use a Warshrine, because I usually use Chosen and I put alot of time into my conversion for it. In my normal list I don't have the points to take a chariot, plus I think the model is hideous and I can't think of a good conversion. Of course their statlines are awesome and they can be very points-efficient, but Str7 attacks can ruin your day. IMO, I think chariots are best used as mounts for characters because A) they don't take up Special slots and they become US 5, and therefore able to break ranks/rear charge effectively.
Hope that helps, but keep in mind these kinds of questions come totally down to opinions so experiment with your own ideas to see what works for you.
First off use the special chars if u want. I play with old school guys who call me a cheater for using them well im 23 and my first book was 7th edition and i like the chars sometimes.(sorry played against dwarfs and guy called me a cheater for bringing wulfric in and charging his war machines on turn 2. i use prince sigvald almost every game.
Second horseman i bring two units with spears throwing axes and MOS slaanesh immune to psycho. that way u can kill ur enemies march. I take knights as well usually two units mostly bare because i am a infantry based army builder . warhounds are a good option to go with naked knights
third no warhound are just distractions for me rarely make it across the board. I play againt dwarfs vampires empire and tomb kings.
I use nurgle on my block that includes my general say prince sigvald in 20 warriors with shields halberds command and nurgle. i usually bring two units of warriors with 12-15 with two hand wep and mark on khorne frenzy nothing else cause i take an exalted on disk with banner of the gods to keep them in combat so i can flank charge the next round. slaanesh is used on horseman, marauders, chariots, and warshrines for me. they dont run from fear terror and panic
I had bad exp with spawns. but started using them again cause they are cheap for two. good on flanks and unbreakable. great for holding up units that are frenzied to flank or set up attacks
Forsaken are not my style... rather ogres with chaos armor MOK and two hand wep. i play for wounds some people for protect.
Warshrines for me have won many games on the last turn cause of them. Ive never had one killed in combat just ran off the board. thats why i put MOS on them or fly my banner of the gods near it. they have great saves and attacks. i love them
Thanks guys for the comments I am going to play a 1500 pt battle with a Dark Elf player. He will probably bring 2 units of dark riders some shades and xbowmen, also an asf black guard, warriors/corsairs and of course the always present HYDRA, also 3 sorceresses (magic heavy). lol I was thinking of going with this....

Hey man i play against dark elves a lot. heres some advice. take it or leave it. I like ur base army it will do good. Wulfic is great but for the point total i would not take wulfric. I use him in 2250 point games plus even if he comes in turn 1 u cant charge until turn 2, thats lots of points not being used on the board. If u want to take away is magic i got some suggestions.
Three sorc with nurgle always take the first spell. Buboes LOS 24" single model wound no armor save. very nice to character kill his heroes take on book of secrets +1 power die and a spell from shadow death or fire choose shadow and take the first spell 20 inch charge for a unit. give on power familar. theres and item that gives plus one to cast to all sorcs within 3 inches. put two sorcs in one unit and they both get plus 1 that way buboes 5+ to cast and the shadow spell for 20" charge are one die capable. So thats 10 power die and 5 dispel die.
I put your army in my army builder and ur kinda over in points i made one 1500 just check it out
Lv 2 Sorc Nurgle Skull Tatum (sorc within 3" +1 to cast) 190pots
Lv 2 sorc nurgle Book of Secrets +1 power die One spell from death, shadow, or fire 165pts
Lv 2 sorc nurgle power familar Chariot 265pts
25 marauder lite armor shield standard champ no musican 166pts
18 warriors shield standard and champ 312 (insert sorcs here)
5 Horseman throwing spears musican 76pts
5 Knights 200pts
2 chaos spawn 110pts
1500 points 10 power die 5 dispell 59 pts in army
he will have shooting what ever is in front of the try to get the 20inch charge spell of on the first turn and take them out. Just played empire tonight moved knights 14 inches forward then magic i had one wizard and he had one as well i cast curse of the leper he used all three die to dispel it. i cast buboes on his captain one wound for him then the shadow lore spell that gives 20 inch charge took out his hangunners then charged his wizard took it out next turn then cannon was gone. My MOK warriors hit his great swords with halberd detachment and wiped them out cause marauders hit the flank the chaos spawn were messed up by his pistoliers but i charge and he failed his flee and my hound flank charged next turn. BTW captain was killed on turn two with buboes he was in the greatswords. It was a good match. Laters and good luck.
