Ok, stupid thread title, right? Chaos lords are the best. But I was wondering if this guy was good enough to kill ranks and files of troops, high armoured heavy cavalry and even characters, and basically be a meteor of destruction as dubbed by white dwarf:
Chaos Lord (I don't think I should list individual prices or certain details, obvious reasons)
Mark of Tzeentch (+1 to existing ward save in this case)
Daemon Sword (+D6 Atks, +D3 str, can harm himself though)
Collar of Khorne ( Magic resistance, 6+ ward)
Manticore (Fly terror, killing blow, etc.)
So this guy boasts a 1+ armour save in combat (I may be mistaken), 5+ ward save, and magic resistance, defensively.
Offensively, he has 5 base attacks at strength 5, +D6 attacks. All of these attacks have +D3 strength added to them. He also has the 4 manticore attacks with killing blow, but he may also go frenzied because of a certain special rule which will add 2 attacks (Does frenzy carry over to the rider of the mount? I always assume it is like a fear-causing mount will therefore have a fear-causing rider) at strength 5.
"Best" case scenario, this model has 17 attacks, 12 at strength 8, 5 at strength 5 with killing blow.
The bad news is that he is 520 points approximately and he can harm himself, but then I am using him in a game of 2250 potentially, and he has a good enough save and ward to shrug off such self-inflicted punishment (I have uncanny luck rolling 5+ invulnerables and wards)
Is there a better lord combination out there that can do more for less, before I go gung-ho spending frenzy crazy?
Well, to begin with you can only have a maximum of 10 attacks with the Demonsword, so take that into consideration.
Even with that sword and a Manticore you will have trouble going against any unit that has some modicum of static combat res. I just don't see it being worth the points to take such a weapon. I don't know of any combination that would make a Lord capable of going against large units and special characters.
Not to mention that sword is pretty dangerous. I generally don't like taking gambles like that. The Aethersword would be a much better weapon. A Chaos Lord is already hitting 95% of the units in the game on a 2 or 3, there really is no need for adding strength. Bonus attacks would be nice, but not at the cost of potentially smacking yourself with a few S6-8 attacks. Talk about yikes!
The best I could come up with is
Armor of Morrslieb
Favour of the Gods
Definitely a Gamble with the MoK and lack of ward vs. shooting, but much more surviveable in CC and will easily take down most enemy characters. It is also not nearly as expensive as the manticore.
Flubb your attacks against a unit with static combat resolution and you are looking at losing a lot of victory points for a chance to gain little victory points. It just isnt point effective to consistently use in a competitive setting.
A character with the Axe of Khorne is pretty brutal in close combat, with your character hitting most enemies on 3's, with strength 6, and killing blow. I trashed three enemy heroes (two of them charged me!) with a hero weilding this; a lord would just make it more impressive.
Another awesome weapon is the runesword, giving one Weapon Skill, Attack, and Strength; most normal things will hit him on 5's, and he'll hit anything on 3's. Again, you have strength 6, and an additional attack!
We get some pretty nice weaponry.
I would not take the Daemonsword if you paid me, that thing has a bad tendency to kill it's owner. The improved Strength of those attacks will probably cut through whatever high armor save you got. I agree that The Axe of Khorne or Chaos Runesword are better alternatives and are cheaper too.

If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
Try the Demonsword on a level 4 Tzeetch Wizard with an enchanted shield, favor of the gods and a barded steed. On a max strength hit against yourself (rare), you still have a 4+ armor and a 6+ ward. Its not perfect but still a pretty good trade-off. The lord is just too strong for that Sword but the wizard can take it. Average would be that he has 6.5 strength 6 attacks. On top of that he can cast and pool dispel dice.
What kind of pansy Khorne lords are you running here?
Of course Khorne lords take the daemon sword! It hits hardest, it hits the most! lord on juggy with enchanted shield and daemon sword. Gets a 4+ AS against the worst the sword can dish out, 3+ most of the time. averages 9.5 str 7attacks a turn!
And the best part is if you cut off your own head you get an eye of the gods roll just after you die! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
