Welcome to Librarium Online!
For my group of Wars with EHWs i was gonna do 2 rows of 6, that seems good, but for a unit of warriors with shields, a mainstay tarpit unit, would you do rows of 6 or 5.
i was gonna do 3 rows of 6 but i'd save 42 points if i just got 15, it seems just the same tooo me. Same question with chosen, are they better in 5s or 6s. Thanks in advance
I would definitely keep your Chosen and duel wielding Warriors in rows of 6. Your tanking tar pit warriors could probably get away with 5 per row. As you mentioned it's cheaper to use 15 and you'll still get the +2 rank bonus which would be beneficial for tar-pitting.
Hope this helps.
I think the warriors are too expensive to use as a tarpit. I like to use my mauraders to rack up CR with extra ranks. My warriors are there to hit and cause massive damage on the strike with as many models as possible. 6 Warriors hitting with AHW, and if you added MoK - now that would be more damage than most units can take. I usually get hammered by a gunline, but I only need to get a full front line of six to hit the enemy and then it is usually over for them - especially squishy Empire and Elves!
I like 2 rows of 6 for Warriors and leaving the multiple ranks for the Mauraders.
My Warriors will always be run 6 across, to maximize base to base contact. They'll usually carry shields and halberds, so to be able to defend or destroy with ease. Great weapons I use when I expect to hit tougher opponents (against men and elves, as stated above, they're overkill and I'd like to avoid striking last in case the combat is prolonged)
Chosen run the same as my warriors, just expect them to do whatever the warriors would do, but better. They're pretty versatile as they will always have a beneficial gift to start; additional toughness or armor save and they will not die, additional strength or attack and they will murder everything, etc. You get the idea.
So to reiterate: you take warriors/chosen for their offensive capabilities, and marauders for relatively cheap SCR. Marks may be applied as desired.
I prefer using the setup of 2x6 Warriors for two-handed weapons unit (usually frenzied for massive damage output). When I use shield only I prefer using rows of 5. I currently favour a unit of 3x15 + hero inside (or 1-2 extra warriors) + war banner (adds the extra edge it needs).
Do you use 2x6 full comand?, If so.. do you use a magic banner?
A good tarpit unit for me is Marauders with hand shields and light armor and Mark of Tzeentch, they have a 4+ parry save and 6+ ward. in groups of 20+ they will keep even hard hitting knights at bay for a round or two. People say to take flails or great waepons and maybe mark of khrone. That doesnt make as good a tar pit unit. You dont want your tarpit unit to hit hard, you want it to tie up enemy units. So make them as defensive as possible so they can live longer and tie up the enemy for another round.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
