Can a Steam Tank be effected by Infernal Gateway? The rule says that "Only spells with a given Strength can damage a Steam Tank - all other spell effects are ignored." This how I interpreted it; The tank could be damaged by the spell but would be immune to the "wisk away" rule, as it says that "all other spell effects are ignored". If an 11 or 12 were rolled, they would simply be Strength 11 or 12 hits.
If you roll an 11 or 12 for the strength of Infernal Gateway, the Steam Tank will be whisked away. If you roll max strength for Infernal Gateway, the spell is not hurting or causing any wounds to the affected unit, it is merely removing it from play.
Well, strange as it may seem, the literal interpretation to me looks like the steam tank would not be affected at all, namely because there is no given strength value for a roll of 11 or 12.
Something tells me that the even a steam tank could be swallowed up by a malefic portal into the aether, though.
I'd argue that you rolled 2 dice to determine the strength, so the spell has a strength value so all other effects are also included.

This is incredibly ambiguous. On one hand, I imagine the Steam Tank's rule is to prevent any weaker spell that relies on a characteristic test from destroying it. On the other hand, the rules for infernal gateway seem to be there to provide the chance for the spell to do exactly that, remove even the most incredible death star units from play.
Rules-wise, I'm not sure what the replacement effect rules are for GW rules. Since Tournament play is not a priority, I am not surprised they do not have any clarifying language for this. To me, the "... if an 11 or 12 is rolled for the spell's strength, remove the unit from play..." really makes it sound like a replacement effect, where the spell would no longer have a strength value, but a remove from play effect. I just don't know how GW would classify these things and I need to get to class before my students start leaving.
