Each week, a new topic will be posted up about a different unit in the army book. This gives you your chance to discuss the unit to its fullest. So, please leave your comment!
Are they useful? If not, why not? How many would you take in a unit? Any options available for them worth the points?
a) They are definitely worse than knights and drogers, probably worse than ogres.
b) Play them in a unit of three. Just keep them cheap as much possible.
c) The biggest advantage of them is imo their breath, great against the knights and other well armoured units.
d) The biggest disadvantage of them imo is Ld4 + Stupidity, not very reliable characteristics.
Overall I find them still playable, but, its hard to find place for them, because we have much better choices in specials. I definitely like the models, funny miniatures in our army
They might be useful if your general is the same speed or slower, say if he's in a unit of Chaos Warriors or the like. They're a good unit for countering heavily armored knights, and drawing fire away from your more valuable units.
However, Ogres are more flexible, and probably a better choice in most cases. With a great weapon, the Ogres have S6 on the charge, which would deduct three from their armor save, making a 2+ a 5+, which is probably good enough for most situations.

The trolls are cheap yes for what they do, but have one big liability: they need the general or a hero LD to make their stupitidy test.
Using a hero inside a unit of troll is not a good idea because you can still be targeted by shooting. As for making them stick next to your general, it only works well if your general is on foot. If he moves slower than the trolls, your trolls can usually fail one stupidity test and be able to keep up without the general waiting for them. If the general is in a cavalry unit, the trolls will slow him down (especially if they become stupid and your general has to wait for them...).
Another thing to mention is that during deployment, deploying your troll will dictate in what area your general will be placed. Any worthy opponent will know this.
In my opinion they are only useful with a BSB/exalted hero who has EITHER favour of the gods and a solid save, or with helm of many eyes.... stupid+stupid=stupid!
Has anyone thought of Throgg, his rules seem to make trolls worth while, a troll and knight army sounds downright nasty
A small unit of 3 trolls next to a foot chaos lord seems like a good idea also.
Let's not forget mutant regen can really make these guys nasty!

Mutant Regen, as pinkus said, is amazing. With favour of the gods it is simply brutal!!!
The mutant regen works really well when facing shooty armies.
