    Armylists without magic?

    Greetings people!

I thought I’d like to hear some opinions on fielding (competitive) Chaos armies with very little or even no magic. Is it doable?

I started thinking about it when composing a 2500 cavalry force. It’s basically just a bunch of knights, horsemen, the good old drogre-anvil, some hounds, a giant etc. Almost everything has movement 7 and will (hopefully) be across the table in just a couple of rounds. But I also included a sorcerer lord and two lvl 2 sorcerers, which amounted to more than 800 pts...
I couldn’t help but think: What if I ditch those spellcasters and instead take another unit of knights, an über-fighty lord and perhaps a flank-harassing boobsnake-rider? If I can get all of that nasty stuff into CC quickly, why waste hundreds of points on magic? I know that my friends will be fielding one or two mages each, but nothing particularly magic heavy..

What are your experiences with dropping sorcerers and using the points on close combat might instead? Is it as stupid as it is tempting?

I've tried going no magic...it can work, as we are so resilient to shooting damage that most magic missiles are harmless. However, you will be powerless to stop Wolf Hunts, Invocation, Danse, Beast Cowers, and all of the other spells that actually turn the course of a game. I've started taking a scroll caddy, unfortunately.

I think atleast having one scroll caddy with 2 dispell scrolls will keep the insanely dangerous spells from tearing up your cavalry.

Scroll caddy... don't leave home without it.

Maybe you'll be able to do this if magic change in the next edition. By the way, a mounted scroll caddy cost 151 pts and he is the equivalent a hand weapon & shield warrior in close combat + 1 extra S4 hit. So your 151 pts invested in magic protection is in fact more like a 110 pts. It's a steal for what he does (compare to other armies where wizard are frail creature).

I have a very successful non-magic list. It consists of 2 lvl1s on chariots both with 2 scrolls.

    Works wonders:

Sometimes I've got the feeling that the general consensus is: Either go magic heavy (sorcerer lord etc) or go with designated scroll caddies. Is there no middle ground? What about two lvl 2 sorcs in a 2500 army?

That doesn't work, your magic gets defeated so easily that its just a waste of points.

Ive ran with one scroll caddy in a chariot, and then 2 units of chaos knights one with a lord in it the other with a bsb in it. The lord had collar of khorne and the other had fury of blood god so both knight units had magic resistance. I played it against my brothers slaan army which was pretty magic heavy, and did really well. Got my lord's unit of knights into his temple guard unit, knight unit had banner of rage so Even though he had ld 8 stubborn cold blood rerolls i chewed through his unit really quickly. Not sure how that would fare against, lets say, bolt throwers but I had lots of dogs in that army as well maybe do some screening.

As far as middle ground magic, doesn't usually work that well. I have thought about taking 2 lvl 1 nurgle sorcerers and a demon prince lvl 2 nurgle, so I would be throwing around 3 buboes a turn, if they just brought a scroll caddy they would have a hard time stopping that many buboes, throwing 2 dispel dice at my 2 power dice, some would get through. And if I faced a magic heavy army then I would have 5 dispel dice and maybe 3 scrolls so some fairly solid defense. And i won't have invested that much in magic, especially if I just toss the wizards in chariots. Just something I've thought about but haven't put into action yet.

2 x lvl 2 are doable but depending on what else is in the list

lvl 2 with power familiar and scroll
lvl 2 with Rod of Torment
    Exalted with book of secrets
A unit with the Banner of Wrath

    Is not bad 8PD + 2 bounds 4DD + 2 scrolls

On the weekend i saw a WOC list like this
    Lord on Jugger
    Exalted BSB on Jugger
    3 x 6 Khorne Knights
    1 Giant
    2 x 30 marauders with flails MoK
2 x 6 Marauder horse with flails and MoK
    some dogs.

Was on the top tables in the last round so must have been ok
