Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm working on a new 2250pt Warrior/Chosen heavy list, I was wondering what everyone would use as flank protectors for larger blocks of Warriors and Chosen. Spawn are the first thing that comes to mind, they are fast and unbreakable; able to hold a unit in place long enough for my warriors to join the fray.
What does everyone else like to use as reliable flank protectors?
Thanks in advance: Beardy Bearderson
one good flank protector might be a hellcannon their also unbreakable and tough
Hellcannons are great. however one problem with that is that a unit of knights can chew threw a spawn in one turn easy, so sometimes a unit of hounds can actually work pretty well if you angle them properly to keep cavalry off the flanks. I would definitely include some spawn though because any flying march blocker would be your doom, but a spawn has 360 charge arc so a couple of them could really help you out.
Chariots can do the job too, the free pivot is great to redirect, and thier movement speed is closer to that of warriors, and they hit harder than a spawn
I agree with dandaman. I've heard that chariots are great for protecting the flanks of blocks of infantry. Alternatively, I'd probly use hounds. Cheap and expendable, really what you need!
I personally love a Hellcannon on my flank. Terror, unbreakable, T6 with a 4+ armor save. Sweet music to my ears. If you're too tight on points for the Hellcannon, use a Warshrine. They're T6, have a 4+ armor save backed up with a 4+ ward! Talk about a tar pit. They can hold and give you time to counter charge with your infantry block. Just be mindful of units with lots of combat res. Mark them Slaanesh to negate any panic checks. Plus you get the Giver of Glory ability. Sweet deal for those infantry blocks.
Another disadvantage of spawn is the random movement speed; it's very easy to roll a double one and muff up your battleline.
for large units of Warriors a small 10 man unit of Marauders usually work well enough for me
spawns do work because for every time you roll a double 1 for movement, you will roll a double 6 so in the long run the Spawns do tend to work out (of course there will always be "Those Games" that they don't move at all)
"Thank him who puts me loath to this revenge on you who wrong me not for him who wrongd"
The problem with the random movement is that if you do roll that double 6 you're still moving at the same speed as your 8" march battleline, so the possible positives are outweighed by the possible negatives. Just my two penneth.
Wow, lots of great responses, but I don't really understand how units of Marauders with thier movement of 4 could possibly stop flying units, skirmishers, or light cavalry from flanking my Warriors. My regular list makes use of 1 chariot but i'm sure I could pop 2 more chariots into it (one with a mounted wizard and another using my 1 empty Special slot).
I did some serious reading around The Chamber of the Everchosen and lots of thinking and it looks like Hellcannons are one of our best options, they have a relatively high movement value of 6, cause terror, and most importantly they are unbreakable. But I think the most important advantage the hellcannon lends to any Warrior-heavy list is it's ability to threaten your opponent from range, hopefully (with some help from magic missiles) forcing the opponent to move towards your line. However Hellcannons are quite expensive, I could easily get another unit of 12 Warriors with a mark of Slaanesh and shields/halberds for nearly the exact same price.
Similarly Warshrines seem too slow to threaten skirmishers and flying units.
Sounds like my best bets are chariots, maybe a unit of chaos knights with the banner of wrath and a Hellcannon.
I was also playing around with the idea of mounting my Sorc. Lord on a Manticore, anyone used a Manticore before?
thanks for all of the very helpful replies, be sure to keep them coming.
