Short and sweet, why would one ever want to pay the points to 'upgrade' to lances?
only a +1 str in comparison and only on the charge, and not being a magic weapon.
As a side note: does anyone put the lances on the models simply for ascetic purposes?
Firstly yeah I put lances on some of my modles for ascetic purposes and secondly, I have seen lances used in a all cav army where they used 1 unit of knights of nurgle as an anvil and khorne knights (with lances) as the hammer. It worked remarkably well.

My knights are modeled w/ lances for aesthetic reasons. Ensorcelled weapons can just as well be lance-shaped.
swords of might for an entire knight unit for free is way better than mundane lances. You'll miss that strength 5 magic attack when you take the lances, believe me.
.. and a few of my knights were modelled with lances, but they're painted to be magic the same way the others are.

I agree, I have never seen any reason to switch to lances. I would really be interested in seeing someone make that case. Any takers?
Always strength 5, effective against ethereal targets, and (and please correct me if I'm wrong here) for enemy units that destroy a magic weapon with a successful hit, could be counted during the randomization of that hit....
Khornate Knights with lances are the ultimate killy unit. When you face something that just have to die on the charge you need something over the top.
Like monsters... perfect for those 2 War Hydras the Dark elves use. You just can't afford to have them stuck for another round of combat so the enemy can move into new positions. Sometimes overkill's just enough kill.
I don't say that Ensorcelled weapons are bad, on the contrary I would never send in the above khornate unit in a large block of dwarves or something like that. Ensorcelled weapons are more tactically flexible. I just wanted to show that lances have a use.

Yeah I did the lances for the look but will make them ensorcelled weapons for sure~ esp cos ill be playing WE a fair bit!
Lances have opportunities to shine, but that the price tag they have, they are very hard to justify. I never understood why one would have to pay points to upgrade to lances, as I do not see it as a true upgrade. You are trading stability and magical properties for a shight increase in burst, and a decrease in long term efficiency.
