Topic of the Week - Sorcerer and Sorcerer Lord
This is the start of a new series, that will hopefully bring new ideas and tactics to the forums. Each week, a new topic will be posted up about a different unit in the army book. This gives you your chance to discuss the unit to its fullest. So, please leave your comment!
This week's topic is - Sorcerer and Sorcerer Lord
Is this character worth the points? Why take them rather an exalted hero or a lord? What mark do you give them and why? What magic lore is best for them? Do you mount them? If so, on what? How do you use them?
Ah the Humble Sorcerer. There are so many ways to use them and so many combinations of equipment to give them.
Personally I've never really bothered with Sorcerer Lords and stick mainly to the Hero choices. I think for the points 2 Level 2 wizards put more hurt out than 1 Level 4 and are somewhat cheaper.
A Few set ups I run are thus;
Level 2 Tzeentch, Skull of Katam
Level 2 Tzeentch, Book, Power Stone.
Keep these guys together so they can both benefit from the Skull of Katam. By taking the number 1 spell on both both of these guys and on the Book they can cast 3 Magic Missiles on a 3+. Leaving 5 PD free for their other 2 spells (with +2 to cast). In 1500pts your opponent will be hard pressed to stop this torrent of Magical Abuse.
For Cheaper games (and the new 8th ED) I go for this wee set up. It's not as nasty but it's still pretty hurty.
Level 1 Tzeentch. Rod of Torment
Level 1 Tzeentch. Book. Scroll.
Again both Wizards take the Level 1 Spell and you've got 4 Missiles (1 Bound). Which is pretty nasty and can be very handy to take out things like skirmishers in woods and weaken enemy units.
As for mounts I never really bother but Discs for the above combinations would work very nicely.
Other than the above I only really use Scroll Caddies. I prefer to spend my points on things that can rend and tear. Magic is just a bit too unpredictable for me.
Usualy I prefer them on barded chaos steeds, so they have armour save of 2+ (highest possible for wizards of any kind). Simple sorcerers are usualy best with lore of nurgle (becouse of the default spell), but sorcerer lords and daemon princes are usualy better with tzeentch. Of course everything has its exeptions.
Im a personal fan of the lore of slanesh, the higher spells such as aquesence or seizures are are some of the best. also hellsriek on a steed of slannesh mounted sorceror can reek havok across any army. But it does have to be used on lords ive found cause the first spell is just god awful and you cant really rely on a lvl 2 to get off anything higher than hellshriek.
And while its no disk, the steed of slannesh lets him dance circles around people and get in place for a perfect helshriek (which combinded with diobolic splendor and a doom totem has been a game winner for me) or stay out of harms way.
Im not going to go into how little it does againts ITP armies seeing how obviouse it is, but aquiesece will make your charecters all but immune to attacks from their hordes with their low ledership, and ecstatic still out shines gate way a majority of the time
