I love me some chaos magic. But how am I to make it work now in 8th edition?
Here's a few combos I've been throwing around in my head. Its tough really since I don't know if we'll still be playing 2250 or 3000. But here we go if its 2250.
lvl1 fire sorcerer
lvl1 fire sorcerer
lvl1 fire sorcerer
book of secrets (taking fire)
lvl1 fire sorcerer
That's 2D6+2 dice with 4 channeling throws. I can throw a lot of fireballs at you and with scrolls being 1 per army and me throwing 6 fireballs at you, stuff will get through. Problem is, does this do enough damage to warrant 25% of my army.
2nd option is:
Lv4 death demon-prince
lvl2 fire sorcerer
lvl2 tzeentch sorcerer
lvl2 nurgle sorcerer
book of secrets
This is just a battery for the demon prince to drop the purple sun on people. I'm curious to see though if my lv2 nurgle/lv2 tzeentch combo still works good. It was a staple in every 7th edition army for me.
I'm thinking going cheap with 2 lv2s. Both fire and both on steeds. 1 has power familiar and book of secrets, other has the bound fireball and some other item. That means I can throw 3 bigger fireballs and a small fireball every turn as effective, if not more effectively than the 4 lv1s.
I'd love to hear how you guys are going to go about magic now.
4 level ones is probly one of the worst options you could take now. Keep in mind you can never have more than 12 power dice so you could end up wasting some dice with the +2 and channeling. Either way 1 level 4 will be able to dispell all your spells pretty easily.
There is no reason to ever take a level 4 and 3 level 2s either. It is a lot of wasted points that will sit there and do nothing while one person casts spells.
Black tongue will turn out to be pretty mediocre if not bad once people start playing with this new magic phase.
Here is what I am thinking. 1 level 4 sorcerer(whatever mark probly death) with book of secrets/infernal puppet. You have 5 spells to cast which is more than enough to satisfy the 1+2d6 pd, and you have the extra dispelling capabilities. You can throw whatever else you want on him, but if you are playing a 2500 or above point limit now you have the option of taking a chaos lord with a decent amount of items.
TLDR I believe a level 4 and nothing else is going to be the way to go.
How about the Chosen Nuke?
You build a Chosen Deathstar unit and give the champion Book of Secrets. Then you just run the unit into the most deadly things you can find. when theres just a few chosen left you spend a crapload of Power Dice and hope for a miscast/irresistible force and hope to blow up (which is pretty easy with the book and the puppet), totally annihilating anything that fought the chosen.
"The more choices you force the opponent to make, the better the chance for you to capitalize on his mistakes"
I do not Book of secrets is a good option for a level 4 anymore, since the FAQs came out.
I think I am going level 4 tzeentch with skull of katam on disk and the solid 4+ ward from the commom Magic items or a Nurgle/ Death level 4 with Flying carpet and the 4+ ward!
i'm trying out a Level 4 with the Puppet. I don't think you need much else. With +4 to cast and dispel you should be fine with both casting and dispelling.
As for Lores i'm itching to try out Shadow Magic. Mystifying Miasma is just Nasty as sin. -D3 to Str or Toughness? or WS? is going to seriously hurt anything in combat with your Warriors. -D3 BS is going to have a nasty effect on enemy shooting and this is all on a 5+ to cast!!
If you try the 10+ to cast you lower ALL FOUR of those stats by D3. An average roll will see Ogres reduced to WS1, Str2, T2.......Even with Great Weapons your warriors will laugh at them. Add all those Minuses and add in Curse of the Lepper. Oh........Down to T1 are you? Take the Curse and loose your whole unit.
Shadow might not be hurty Magic but get a few spells off and you can really cause the enemy some problems. Plus, wouldn't it be nice to cast MindRazor on some Khorne Warriors with 2 Weapons?
Found my first build I absolutely love for a lvl4.
Lore of Death
Shield of Ptolos
Blood Curdling Roar
Stream of Corruption
(I'll have a backup wizard with the puppet, and I might put the stream onto my exalted that will be my general)
He's a flier that isn't of the Tzeentch variety. He can cast the purple sun with immunity. If you get into the middle of an enemies lines, misfiring won't really hurt, you still get the purple sun down. He has a 1+ armor against shooting. And kind of weird, he comes in at 410 points, which I feel is cheap, compared to what I'm used to.
Looks like a solid build, but not entirely sold on not having a wardsave on him. A single cannonball or boltthrower stands a pretty good chance of ruining his day, bypassing all his defences
He's a pretty small target, man sized to be exact. You can keep vanguarded horsemen between him and bolts, or another flier, or just take out those machines. I have been playing with flying characters for a long while now and have a basic instinct on where to land my guys. Usually in front of a cannon is always bad. Unless you want to throw a purple sun at the thing.
Personally i think having more than 2 wizz is a waste, you will never generate enough dice to cats all the spells.
This have been my delema having enough magic in the army to be efficient.
At the moment im trailing this:
DP: MoT, Lvl 4, Stream of Corruption, Bloodcurdling Roar, Conjoined Homuclus
Exalted BSB, MoT, Book of Secrets (death), Dawnstone
The DP has done well hunting warmachines and archer units while still cucking out spells.thunderstomp is awesome.
Panda, Treason and Gateway can all be cast with the average number of 7 dice.
What im finding is im missing two things the Dispel Scroll and the puppet and i also want to keep the BSB, however that takes up to many points in characters and ill have to cut my army. This delema keeps me awake at night
