For the last couple of weeks ive been playing 1500pts games at my local club. Most of my games have been fairly close and enjoyable but one person at my club runs a stacked empire gunline with lots of artillary. Last night he tabled me before I even had a chance to engage him in close combat. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with gun lines as chaos.
10 Empire knights
2 x 10 units of handgunners
1 unit of 6 outriders
1 hellblaster volley gun
The volley gun took out both units of my warriors
the mortar destroyed my unit of 30 maurders in his first turn.
my knights got blown to pieces in a hail of hangun fire (even with the blasted standard)
and the outriders just rode round chipping away at whatever I had left.
My only saving gravce was that my wizard gatewayed his knights before his head exploded.
my list was
15 warrios MOK Full commanc
15 Warriors MOK full command
30 Mauders Hw LA & Sheild MOT
7 Mauder Horsemen MOK Standard Muscian
6 Knights Standard Musician MOK Blatsed Standard
Sourcer lvl2 MOT
Exalted Steed, Sword of Might, Sheild

Personally, I'd go for a few unit of hounds to provide some cover for your units and to jump on Warmachine crew that ignore them. At 1500 I'd take 5 units of 5 to provide alot of cover. Even HellBlasters hit on BS so they'll most likely be hitting any units behind the dogs on 6's. If they shoot the dogs then hey, he's doing what you want him to do (not shoot your warriors)
Other than that I'd grab the Knights the Mark of Tzeentch rather than Khorne. This way they're getting a 4+ Ward rather than a 5+. You really don;t need the extra attacks Vs Empire. Especially with a Hero in their midst.
Shooting is our big nemesis. But once we reach the enemy we slaughter then even if we only have a few guys left.
So I'd follow bora(t)s advice here and take some dogs. Just switch those horsemen out for a few units. if you feel strapped for points I'd recomend you ditch those champions. They are very expensive for only addid an attack. And Khornate halberdiers are nasty as they are. No need for 1 more attack. if your warriors cant handle themselves, that champion wont make a difference.
and MoT instead of MoK on the knights. they're too expensive to be let to die to missile fire.
"The more choices you force the opponent to make, the better the chance for you to capitalize on his mistakes"
All great advice so far. The Empire list you described isn't even really a gun line. More of a balanced list. Your opponent may just be a very good player with tons of experience dealing with WoC. Also, it sounds like he got very lucky with everything. When a Helblaster works it works good, but most of the time it just explodes.
I'd recommend playing a few more games with him. Switch up your list, throw some other stuff at the guy, and talk to him afterward to see how he thinks it went. Your list is rather solid and you have a ton of bodies for WoC at 1500 pts.
That said, Warhounds are awesome. If possible take some puppies.
Tzeentch or nurgle everything. Khorne is overkill against what he's throwing at you.

dogs dogs dogs/// id drop 3 warriors from each unit to make them units of 12 go 6 x 2 instead of 15 than ull afford the dogs// just thank the gods that hes not fielding a rocket battery instead of a hellblaster cuz the hellblaster sucks considering u have to roll to hit u should have no problem ducking behind forests for cover or dogs// also like the other guys said, mark of tzeentch on those knites when u fite a weak human like him
Yeah, local gamer fields 2x cannons, 2x helstorms and 2 x mortars, with 2 master engineers close by..........that's a world of hurt for just about anyone :s
A quick fix is too use your puppies like most people suggest. I field them everytime as screens. However I don't put my full reliance upon them.
Not everyone is agreed on special characters but my favourite amongst all of the choices is Wulfrik the Wanderer. I use him in a 30 horde of Marauders Mok and GW's to pop up right behind a shooty army. An EG of which is when I pooped up right behind 2 skaven lightning cannons destroying both and overunning into my opponent main battle line in the rear... yum yum yum.
If you place you army correctly at the start of deployment to discourage your opponent from deploying artillery spread out and with luck get Wulfrik on the board asap you can take out a cluster of art in one swoop!
Blasted standard on a unit of Tzeentch Warriors or Knights will usually get across the board with about 25% casualties. More than enough left over to smack some Empire Cannon crews upside the head.
Chaos hounds are ideal for getting across the table cheap and fast, and tying up war machines...
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
Or fight fire with fire, take a hellcannon or two. Could be nasty if you also take the doom totem, his leadership wont be great if he is empire.
