What do you guys think is the smallest viable list we can field and still be legal in 8th ed?
A friend wants to do a tale of 2 gamers with me and has suggested we start at 500pts, but looking at WoC heroes, 125pts doesnt give us a lot to play with... Should I recommend we go to 750pts for the first part?
Ive got until the end of August to paint whatever points limit we set so the extra 250pts shouldnt be too hard to complete.
Tale of 2 gamers sounds... dull. But if you want to do it, I should remind you that in armies of 500-750pts, a character general is not required. You can name a champion to fill the roll, counting in all regards as the general, although he is not an Independent Character.
How many points can you both field initially? You should really try to be building towards 3000pts for the final product. Seeing as the usual jump was from 500-2500 by 250, I would say that you'll be going from 1000-3000, and start there.
Begin with 2 units of 12 Chaos Warriors with halberds and MoK and start losing games, learning how they work. As you then jump up 250 pts you include a unit of knights and put out the hurt. The next 250 pts sees another unit of warriors and maybe some dogs. Further the army with some characters and warshrine. Then get a hellcannon. always fill out the gaps with more hounds.
now I dont know if this is legal, but it's how I would imagine I would do.

I should point out that he suggested 500pts as he plays O&G so he can easily afford a cheap character
I also wasnt aware that in the smaller games you dont need a character - will have to have a look for that later tonight so he doesnt complain when i get my first list out.
I know it sounds dull, but for me this is just something to get me into painting as I've hardly put brush to model since i started the army at Christmas time It needs to be in manageable chunks as I have work and family to juggle as well as painting and I know that if I bite off more than i can chew, I wont get it done at all
As for what I can field... to be honest i've never counted up what i can field but I'd guess at easily being able to field 3.5k or 4k pts.
Lord on disc
Lord on Jugger
Lord on Demonic Mount
2 mounted sorcs
2 foot sorcs
1 champion bsb
35 chaos warriors (on the look out for one single model so i can run 2x18 )
52 Marauders with HW/Shield
15 Marauder Horse
3 Dragon Ogres
12 Old style warriors (will use as chosen)
Reckon i could get to 4k with that? Everything except the spawn, demonic mount lord and the jugger lord are assembled

the problem is, with the 25% limits on heroes and the same on lords that you wouldn't be able to fit all the characters into the army, as you don't have enough other models to balance it. 2 units of chaos warriors, a large unit of marauders, 10 hounds and 15 marauder horsemen are going to be nowhere near 1000 points, which is the minimum you'd need to be able to field a 4000 point army. Then you'd be allowed 1000 points for heroes and 1000 for lords, which could fit your characters that you have - but the list wouldn't be at all competitive if you had 2000 points buried in characters. 15 knights is a nice unit though. I think you need to be looking more at smaller point values with what you have, and then when you do get up to the large values you're going to need more regular chaos warriors to pad out your numbers in the core section a bit. (and give them halberds against orcs!)

Chaos Sorcerer Lvl 1
2x 5 Marauder Horsemen
...which leaves 35 points to spend on Chosen/Horsemen upgrades for a 340pt legal list!
We were talking the other day at the club about how cheap you could go with a legal army list... did have an O&G list that went:
Night Goblin Big Boss
10 Orc Boyz
2x 1 Team of Squig Herders
140pt legal army
Apparently skaven can go even cheaper!
Give 500pts a go, let us know how you get on! Would take a chaos sorcerer lvl 1 on foot for your general with spell familiar and ruby ring of ruin... bang on the 125pts, has 2 spells and 1 bound spell to chuck around! Should help in making short work of the greenskins!
