Welcome to Librarium Online!
As you can most likely tell from the title, I've decided to begin a Warriors of Chaos army for Fantasy. This will also be my first army for Fantasy at all, and I'll be grabbing the BRB/Codex/Battalion this weekend, and start building the Damned Hordes. I'll most likely keep it at 1000-1500 points, and work from there. Once I grab the BRB/Codex/Battalion, I'll have about a 100 boondollars to begin expanding it with. My only real preference is that I'd prefer Tzeentch/Slaanesh focused (Favorite Gods, and my FLGS is stuffed to the gills with Khornate/Nurgle)
Any thing in particular I should know/get?
Welcome to the Fantasy side of the boards! The battalion box as an awesome first investment in WoC. If I had a hundred bucks to go after that purchase I would go with the following:
Warriors - 12 just isn't enough, so I would buy another box of these right off
Sorc - When I run tzeentch I tend to put my sorcs on foot in a bunker of MoT warriors with HW/S
Chosen command - I am sure this will be a WTF?!? from most of the WoC players out here. I use the standard bearer from that kit as my bsb, the champion as a Lord on foot and the 2 extra chosen as my Exalted heros with halberds. 4 characters for $33? yes please
I know I have to run a Sorc as my General (That's what it's called right? I have only played 40k, and haven't read through the BRB yet).
I've heard good things about MoT Warriors with HW+S. I've also heard great things about Halberds. Any good way to balance these out?
At 1500 points, how many units should I run? I know I need to run a good horde of Marauders (Already painting my first box of them) but what about Warriors/Chosen? At that level, should I take more than one of either?
After the set I'll be purchasing, I'll be getting more next time I get payed. Planning on 1-2 boxes of Warriors, 1 box of knights, and depending on what the list turns into, probably 1 box of River Trolls or Ogres.
Yes, you need a general and the general must be the highest leadership character in your army.
I love tzeentch, but I refuse to field more than one block of HW/S+MoT warriors. I use them to hold the line together and as a character bunker. Other than that, all my warriors are MoK with halberd and I run them in small units of 12 with nothing but a musician. If you keep enough threats on the board your opponent usually has some other target they want to go for and just doesn't have enough magic/shooting to target such a small block. When they get into combat they melt face.
Trolls/ogres are a mixed bag for me. I have tried using small units of them and they just get torn up. The magic number for me seems to be 8-9 in a unit. They'll take their lumps, but still have enough punch to make a difference when they engage. They fill the same roll to me as MoK halberdiers do, though (anti-infantry)... so they usually get cut in favor of more MoK halbred warriors. When I do run trolls, it is in a unit of 8 with throgg and I deploy them as part of a refused flank in games bigger than 2000 points. I deploy all my pups first, pull him to one flank by deplying my trolls there, then I deploy the rest of my army tight to the other flank. The trolls usually get shot to hell and have almost every gift on the EotG chart and 3-4 left before they get into combat. They 2 things they need to fear are fire wizards (OUCH) and death wizards (Purple sun minces trolls).
For anti MI, knights reign supreme in my mind. They take away the stomp attack (can't stomp cav) and do enough s5 attacks to peel off the rank bonus. Point for point, knights beat up MI. I have had a 200 pt unit of knights hold up a 360 point MI unit for over 4 turns before.
Another unit not mentioned are Chaos Chariots. I usually field at least one. They are fantastic support on this ever-congested 8ed battlefield because they only need corner-to-corner contact with an enemy unit to dish out all of their attacks. That, and they aren't being blown to bits by S7 attacks anymore. MoT makes them slightly more survivable and you always have the option to throw a character on there (only did it a few times, with mixed results), and it'll cost you 20 points less that way.
1) The few times I have won in 8th (I had a very hard time with Lore of Life back when I was trying to run a purist Tzeentch list) it has been warriors + shadow sorc that won the game for me. I run my knights in units of 5 with nothing but a musician for 210 points. They are my flank protection/warmachine hunters/close infantry support/missile unit tarpit. Anything bigger and they get SILLY expensive. 10 with MoK and blasted standard would have pretty good protection getting in and they would hit like a freight train... but at 500 points they should!
2) I believe trolls are better than ogres. I also believe there is nothing an ogre can do that warriors cannot for less points. If you are looking for 24 Strength 6 attacks that would cost you 222 points for 12 MoK warriors with great weapons. To get that much hit out of an ogre, you would need 8 of them at a cost of 270... 300 if you give them chaos armor to match the warriors. Ogres are big, they would get 4 str4 stomp attacks, they draw more fire than a block of 12 warriors, but in terms of raw hit warriors can do it cheaper. Trolls are totally diferent in my mind. The EotG roll any time they make 2 regen saves in a turn is awesome! They work best in big blocks because on average you are going to take as many wounds as you make regen saves. If you run a block of nine across the table you can usually get 4 or 5 into combat. By that time you may have S6, T5, 4A trolls that cause terror and are lead by a LD9 Throgg... all from the Eye of the Gods rolls. In my lists, trolls do not hit the table until 3K. I would not make them a first buy.
I almost forgot to mention. In the painting list, I think the pups from the battalion should come next!! My rule of thumb is one unit of pups for every 750 points. Do not underestimate pups. They suck in combat, but having the utility of a unit with M7 that costs 30 points is soooo worth taking a few of them. If you run out of uses for them, just line them up on your opponent's deployment edge. I have gotten a lot of points by using pups to run down fleeing units!!
Personally I would go with 2 battalions and an extra box of warriors + any characters you want. That gives you 40 maruders, 20 warhounds, 36 warriors and 10 knights + chars.
