I'm mostly a Dark Elf player but have lately been looking into other armies and am mostly interested in Warriors of Chaos.
A local shop wants to sell me 1 Khorne Lord (on Juggernaut), 15 Chaos Knights, 1 Champion of Chaos, 39 Warriors, 10 Warhounds and the codex for 250$.
It seems like a great deal but with so many warriors, it makes me wonder if these specific models are any good. They seem alright, but I'm not sure if they're actually playable now in 8th. editon.
The second offer, which is by a retiring player, is a fully-painted Khorne army (interested since it's already quite beautifully painted) that includes: 1 Warriors of Chaos Army Book, 1 Juggernaut of Khorne, 1 Khorne Chaos Champion, 2 Units Warriors of Chaos (12 Models each), 2 Units Marauder of Chaos (20 Models each), 1 Unit Marauder Horsemen (5 Models), 1 Unit Chaos Knights (5 Models), 1 Garmes Workshop Carrying Case and movement trays for 350$.
The second one also brings a nice little case for the models. Any feedback would be awesome! The faster, the better since they might be sold soon!

The retiring player is giving you the better deal by far. The price off the models in both offers are the same, but the vet is throwing in a case (80) and a painted army (priceless)
However, the model selection you get from your shop is better- you'll get little use out of marauder horsemen and 24 warriors is enough for just over a regiment now. So, for 100 dollar difference, you could get your own case.
I guess the deciding factor is the paint. Is it good? And more importantly, can you replicate it? Because you'll need to add models to either offer. Especially the painted one, as it seems to contain fewer points.
I think it really depends if you want to have your own army. The Store is giving you models you can work on, models you can paint, convert and make an army to suit yourself and your own style.
The retiring player is giving you an already completed army, painted.
Using someone elses army is like wearing someone elses clothes. They feel a bit weird, aren't your own and you take less care of them. Sometimes they even make you feel dirty. If you just want an army to 'get going' with then go for the Vets army. If you're after an army you can lavish time on and call your own then take the Stores offer.
your shop is offering you stock worth 294 $ gw in store retail value, so not a bad deal. If it goes for the warriors they are I think the best core units you can get, on par with most special units in other armies. for 15 pts you get a ws 5, s 4, t 4, I 5, 2+ attack ld 8 killing machine. ask if the wouldnt swap the 10 war hounds and 5 knights for 40 marauders thou
Store offer most definatley.
I would however ask to drop 5 Knights and 4 warriors for at least 20 marauders with the view of bulking them upto a 30/40 sized unit.
34 Warriors are more than enough. Essentially 3 units of 12 (Ranked 2x6) or 2 of 17 (Ranked 2x6+5+Khorne Champ.)
Unless you want to run a Tzeentch knight Deathstar 10 knights should see you pretty happy through 3000pts or less games.
The Marauders i personally use with Wulfrik to mess with the enemy. A Block of 30 Marauders with MoK and GW negates its low T and S and can hold up the enemy whilst taking a few enemy with them.
Keep the Hounds if you can. As a rule Never deploy a choas army without your puppies. Not only do they count as a deployed unit (Thats 2 units of 5) that could see your enemy placing down some important units you can then react too with your warriors.
I'd actually take the retiring players stuff and add to it if you have the painting skill to do so. You'll have to do some work to get everything up to snuff (buying another box of warriors and splitting them between the units, buying more Marauders, adding other units and characters, etc). If you have the money then get that and a Battalion with a Batallion you'll have:
-2 units of 18 Warriors
-2 Units of 30 Marauders
-2 Units of 5 knights
-The rest builds of this core beautifully.
You'll have enough to paint and you'll also be able to start playing using a great army right away. I've personally never had trouble using other people's models (I love army-swapping) so I guess its a matter of personal preference.
Thanks for all the feedback but it seems the store offer is better. I might as well get some marauders along with the offer.
I'd do store for sure, but it's only because I like to create my army in my own way. If you like others to do your building and painting for you, that's cool, but thats 33% of the fun. For me, there's only one worse feeling than deploying an unpainted unit(believe me i have plenty), and that is deploying something that someone else painted for me.
I jumped in with both feet when I purchased my WoC army and picked up this deal: Warhammer Chaos Big Army Deals . No, I'm not affiliated with them at all. If I were you, I'd see if I could pick up some more skrinkwrapped miniatures as opposed to getting the painted ones. I wasn't overly impressed with the Wulfrik and Nurgle Sorceror on foot that I got from them, painted. It's a chunk of change, but you don't often see discounts on GW stuff since their resale margin is so slim. If I'm not supposed to post stuff like this, mods, sorry and feel free to nix it.
