Welcome to Librarium Online!
I saw after a bit of browsing that the members here gave some realy good advice to newcomers to the game so i come seeking the same.
I have a decent grasp(for a starter) of the game, played a couple of casual games for fun but not with a Woc army, which is the one i want to start working on.
Basically, I already have some models(Lord on Steed 1x, Sorcerer 1x, Chosen 5x, Knights 5x), the army book and soon one of the new rule books. I also have an idea of what figures to get next, or rather what i thought would be a decend line-up after I am done with it, but since my knowlage is based on reading articles and watching a couple of games i would like your oppinions if you think im wrong with something or could improve any parts.
So here it goes(it is more or less the core/special/rare part i am having troubles with)
Chaos Warriors 18x, full command grp
Chaos Warriors 18x, fullcommand grp
Chaos Marauders 40x
Chaos Marauder Horsemen 5x
Chaos Marauder Horsemen 5x
Chaos Knights 5x
So the idea is to get one or two batalion boxes (I am not intimidated by painting miniatures, it has been a hobby of mine for a couple of years now) and then fill out with some box sets.
But thats the poing where some questions popped up.
In the batalion box i get Warhounds but i have been advised that i should simply use the Marauder Horsemen instesd of them, so are the horsemen that much better than the Hounds? And if i dont use any of those units as ˝point fillers˝ are both a good option?
Also are two Knight groups of 5 viable? I have read that infantry badly trumps cavalry in the 8th. ed so im a bit sceptical.
Is the Chosen regiment of 5x is a good option to play? (i can always use them as a Warrior Command group otherwise) I havent seen a lot of army lists with them in it.
Also some tips on where i could put my heros and where command groups would be a must are very wellcome.
Thanks in advance,
1. Hounds vs. Marauder horsemen:
Well i think that most guys in here would agree that hounds are better for their point cost then Marauder horsemen are. I like the marauder horsemen, but i like warhounds ALOT better, right now im running 3 x 5 hounds and no horsemen. If i had lots of point to spend i wouldent mind some horsemen aswell tho. So they arent bad, but i anytime i would go hounds instead.
2. 2 groups of knight:
In the old edition i often ran 2 x knights at 2250 points. But in the new edition i have been running more marauders, and finding it hard to fit in 2 x 5 knights. But the knights are deffenitly still a excelent choice, they still kick ass. Might not break infantri as easy as before, but send them after their monsters and other tough things in their army. Having 2 makes it hard for your opponent to take them both out, but if you only have one group they are often crippled or gone before they reach the enemy, since they often attract alot of attention from shooting/magic.
So all in all, in 2250 points i find it hard to fit 2250 right now, at 3000 i would proberly concider it. But if you go for it, the knights will not let you down - they rarely do
3. Chosen in small groups:
I dont like a low amount of Chosen like 5 or something like that. The reason why people rarely run them is because they are so damn expensive, and its often hard to fit both Warriors and Chosen and Warriors are often easier to fit since they are core, and helps you reach that 25% point limit. I really like the Chosen tho, but if i run them i would like to have a warshrine aswell. So i usualy only run these two things in 2500+ points.
As for the size of the regiment, i wouldent go lower then 12 (2x6) but you would always like to have more, if you can find the points
4. As for other tips:
Dont get full command groups on your units. Only get Banner + Musician - but i would get this in all regiments.
Champions are just not worth it IMO, unless you have a sorcerer on foot join a unit and want to protect him against challenges.
Chosen are great in small units (and it's a good thing since they're expensive). Make sure you give the Champion the Favor of the Gods magic item, so he can alter your initial Eye of the God roll on the chosen.
"How do you stop a Chaos Knight from charging? No seriously, HELP!" André le Bouffon, jester of the Bretonnian court - last words.
Thanks for the advice, its very helpfull, and for the welcome aswell, i feel like at home allready
I`ve been doing some more reading and surprise! ive got some more questions if you lovely people have the time to give me some more feedback.
I got the basic list down now but im looking at some possible future -expansions- of my army and there are so many nice possibilities i was just wondering which would be your favs...
Cannons seem to be a lot better in the 8th, I think it would be a good upgrade to any army(from what ive read) but would it be smarter to go for a Warshrine first?
Trolls seem very cool atm, but also expensive money wise, so would they be viable as a unit of 3 or would i need more to make it work?
Also then there are the Demons, I didnt get arround to check them out in detail so i dont have any concrete questions, but is there any "must have" or realy good unit amongst them? Or would i be fine with just the Warrior side of Chaos?
I know things might and probably will change by the time I get arround to upgrade my army with these units but knowing some specifics now is a huge help regardless.
Warshrines are an absoulte must in my opinion. You can convert them out of anything since there are no offical models they have T6 WS5 4Attacks and if MOT they have a 3+ ward which makes them very hard to kill also they can buff at some units and are only 150 points. I delibrately place them near missle troops to bait them into attacking them instead of my warrior units. Mine are just a group of maurder musicans with some spawn bits and other stuff in my rummage cupboard. My other is old stegadon with no head being led by a Warrior with a halberd.
I dont own any trolls due to the cost implications you could convert them from the new plastic river trolls but thats still £30 for three. Hellcannons in this ed have had a big boost since if they hit anything they cause a panic test at -1 ld also get thunderstomp and are unbreakable.
you can never go wrong with more warriors since they are pretty much everyone elses elite infanrty units. Giants are good fun to use and make great tar pits.
Yea beeing able to use Daemons in a Warriors army was a bit fishy to me aswell, but i guess that particular game was just a friendly or a player used a unit as fill-up. Thanks for clearing that up, makes much more sense now.
I also noticed a lot of creative warshrine designs, im surely going to have a go at it at some point
Giants sound fun, trolls aswell tho, so i guess its what i would have points for in the end.
Thanks for the feedback.
