I have a game this Wednesday and I need a little advice as its my 1st against Skaven...
Add hand Wep
MoT/N - Not sure which one to take...
My thinking is to maximise amount of attacks against potential horde units.. hence the MoK and additional hand weapons on my warriors. The amount in each unit is because I expect to come up against a lot of magic and atleast 2 Warp Lightning cannons... So I'm gunna take incoming.
My knights are there to mush through any Rat Ogres..
Warhounds as screens and if I run them fast enough take out his 2 Warp lightning cannons..
Hellcannon is obvious really.. Im expecting a horde of clanrats so a good chance to hit them at -1 Ld is handy.
Anyone else have any hints or tips against Skaven?
I'd run the warriors 6x3. That way you have both numbers and frontage. you really want to maxomize that damage output. and don't try to play the numbers game against skaven. They'll both outrank you and outnumber you. So don't even try it. After a few turns of combat and you've eaten through a unit.
If you go for the Blasted Standard then I'd recomend MoT. 4+ ward save againt shooting is silly good on the games best cavalry. It's a big investment though, so I'd go for a bigger unit.
The best armour you're going to face is 5+. Spears+shields or stormverming with heavy armour. So take halberds or additional hand weapons with Razor Standard on your warriors. that will eat through any armour you will be facing effectively.
There might even be some real killer weapons on those skaven characters. So I'd take the Runeshield or something else protective to nullify his investments. Your base stats are amazing enough to go toe to toe with anything.
If he know he'll be facing Chaos warriors he'll probably bring something to kill your characters and then he'll have something to shoot the crap outa you with. He won't beat you in combat, so if it was me playing skaven I wouold bring lot's of big cheap tarpit units of slaves.
"The more choices you force the opponent to make, the better the chance for you to capitalize on his mistakes"
I figure I will drop 2 Warriors from each unit giving me 68 pts to play with. Now when attacking at S4 to modify his typical AS of 5+ I take that to a 6+/6++ To me I can live with that and use points for a potential Razor standard elsewhere. I typically run them in ranks of 6, the only reason behind having 20 was to taking appalling magic damage in the last game we played. (Lost 16 warriors to Power of the 13 spell)
With those 68 pts I'd then be inclined to drop the Knight Champ to a normal knight freeing another 20 to add an additional 2 knights giving me 7 in the unit (including my Exalted on Jugger)
The Runeshield is a fine investment, and I am aware of my opponent using an Assassin in his clan-rat horde. However does this sin come with magic weapons/additions to justify the Rune shields use? If so I'll be taking it.
Also is my sorc equipt well enough to defend me from that nasty Skaven magic phase?
If i remember rightly the chap runs his army like so:
Clanrat horde 30-40 strong
3-4 rat Ogres
2 Warp Lightning cannons
2-3 Giant rat packs
5-9 plauge monks in skirmish order (I think)
Last question.... Does flank charging skaven nullify their leadership test gained from ranks?
Your last question is referring to "disruption" (pg 52, BR. If you flank or rear charge a unit with a 5x2 (+) unit, then the enemy block does not gain their rank bonuses for SCR.
Awesome thanks man, Might have to grab to flanking units. I'm planing on taking my Sorc as Nurgle and swapping out 1 20 warrior unit for a 15 unit of chosen with the Book of secrets. I think that other T/S test spell is called Mystical Miasma or something similar. Hopefully I can take out his whole horde unit in by the start of the 2nd magic phase ;]
Ok so I played my match last night and It went all right I guess.
I lost another 16-17 of my chosen to Power of the 13 spell again >_< Missed dispelling it by 1 on 7 dice. Needed a 28!! So after waving goodbye to 400 or so points that didn't manage to get a hit in I was pissed...
Fortunately I got a little lucky in the sense that he Misfired on almost all his Warp Lightning cannons, after I destroyed one with a 5 unit of warhounds. Forcing his massive slave unit to flee off the board.
My 18 strong warrior unit + Exalted mowed through his stormvermin likes wheat and pursued and caught them.
My 5 Knights failed 3 toughness tests to censer bearers and fluffed there armour saves vs Rat ogres.
In the end however I won the game as a massacre to me. I will hopefully post a more detailed battle report along with pictures of units later.
Only noticed this one now, but shields are a bit wasted on warriors with mok imo, due to them not being allowed to parry, although I suppose it does help a bit against shooting (if not much against skaven). Also, you're only allowed to roll 6 dices for dispelling, just as he can only use 6 dice to cast (unless he's playing dark elves)
Flanking is such an important aspect against horde armies. It can make quite a difference since they do not get as many attacks back when you charge them from the flank, plus the fact that you get a +1 CR for Charge and a +1 CR for flank, you are already on the positive side before blows are even struck. Plus you challenge (and hopefully destroy one of his characters) and you have overkill bonuses for CR. You have just negated their superior numbers.
Against magic, I would suggest either a common dis spell scroll, or a scroll of shielding (4+ ward save for the unit targeted with a damage causing spell [paraphrased]).
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
