Was watching an Empire vs. Lizardmen game a few days ago between my friends. At one point, the Lizzy charged with a combat-heavy hero and challenged the Empire player's level 2 wizard. At that moment, he throws down Van Horstman's Speculum and completely slaughtered the enemy hero.
I'm now terrified of this 30 point item. I don't see how it's possible that such a thing exists. My Khorne Lord and his ridiculous stats could be swapped for a naked level 2 wizard's stats and, well, you can tell what happens then.
Is there a way besides ranged attacks (hellcannon, etc.) to take care of this item?
BTW, Van Horstman's Speculum allows the wearer to swap WS, S, T, I and attacks (all or none).
If there is, I haven't really found one. My opponent regularly runs an archlector with speculum, armour of meteoric iron and a 4+ wardsave and a gw......so that's my stats and attacks with hatred in first round, 1+ armour save and then a 4+ ward
I play both empire and WoC among other armies. At one point I played a friend with my empire. Had a arch lector with speculum, armour of meteoric iron, 4+ward and GW like aboth. It stil lost the challenge to Throgg troll King. It's vomit attack remained at st. 5 and I couldn't get an armour save. Failed the ward save more times the he failed regerating so lost him in 2 rounds.
So I think the way to beat it is using something with special attacks that have pre-defenied stats and abilities.
Exactly. Remember that VHS only swaps for your basic WS, S, T, I, A. They won't be getting our armor, our special rules, or our magic weapons. So yes, it is frustrating that we might go from S5 to S3 or even S2, but if we're fighting onwards with an Ogre Blade, we're still at +3S, or whatever other weapons we might have.
Fortunately for us, there is only 1 of these in each Empire army.
If you're using the shadow magic swap ruse then this is a good time to pull it. Now you're both wizards but the chaos one has armor and maybe a warrior familiar.

I would be curious to know if the swap ruse would cancel the challenge. He technically challenged "Character A" and suddenly you're tossing "Character B" at him.
Of course, this could be funny if you were swapping a Hero out of the challenge and coming back with a Lord. I also believe that you can swap any character of the same troop type. So while you might cast the Shadow spell with a Sorcerer, you could bring an Exalted into the fight. As long as they are both 'Infantry' or both 'Cavalry' or something similar, you are allowed to make the swap. If that's NOT the case, then it's all the more reason to give an Exalted the Book of Secrets.
I'm with Wolf Pack. Our champions are compelled to challenge just like our characters. So have the champ issue or accept the challenge.

Aye except with a Unit champ is probably the best way to go.
However my Lord is generally very hard to kill with the armour of Damnation and a 3+ Ward so he shouldn't really be taking much of a beating, even from another Lord. So while this ineffectual challenge is going on, your unit, which is better than any unit the empire has, is ripping his unit to shreds. You then win on combat res and he breaks ending the challenge.
Other than that? You've got Word of Agony which is a nice little suprise
yeah, word of agony is ace vs VHS (its at beginning of combat round so before challenges are declared, just the wizard will still have his own pap toughness)
if you don't have a ward save yourself, The Other Tricksters shard combo's well with word of agony, so it ignores armour and forces them to re-roll successful ward saves
