I'm heavily moving towards defense as my strategy. Obviously, I still want to get across the board ASAP and kick your ass, but I'm leaving that up to my base stats. What I want is a list of combos we have in our army that makes us near impossible to kill.
Obvious things are tzeentch and blasted standard. I'm running a lv4 in my warriors with collar of khorne and curse icon.
I honestly think I've thought of the best ideas already, but you guys always seem to surprise me with new ideas.
Throw them at me. My goal is to make every model in my army as impossible to kill as possible. I'm even thinking of turning my 15 slaanesh horsemen into tzeentch. Pisses people off when my entire army has a ward save. Heck I do that better than the Brettonians.
I run 5 tzeentch knights with the rage banner (1 of 2 knight units, other has the blasted banner). In this unit I put my ultra defensive, yet surprisingly killy BSB. Talisman of Preservation and a halberd. 5 str 6 attacks with a 2+/3+ save. He also holds the favor of the gods to buff my knights better.
Now is it better to drop his ward save to a 4+ and pick up MR1 from the spell shield. I'd have to drop the favor, which seems like a bad idea, but a 5+ ward against magic on my raged knights would be golden. (one of my main opponents is a Dogs of War player with 2 lv4s (1 metal) and 2 lv2s. He has a stupid magic phase all the time.
I think you have overkill on trying to defend one unit.
You could always do a Festus/Nurgle Regen on unit A and MoN to lower the hit count.
Ironcurse Icon and Collor of Korne beef up unit B with MoT.
Unit C, gets blasting Banner, Fury of the Bloodgod and Tzeentch.
Unit D gets buffed by a warshrine.
A disc Rider flies around with Eye and Dispell Scroll.
Anything else hides behind, and comes out for the charge.

Semi what I have now. I don't play special characters though. My Tzeentch warriors get a 4+ against magic and a 5+ against war machines. Knight unit 1 gets a 4+ against magic and shooting. My knight unit 2 doesn't have anything beyond tzeentch's 6+
All my experience in playing WoC. My main army since the book came out 2.5 years ago (or however long it is) says we hard damn hard to kill and not much stands up toe to toe to us. 7th edition told me we were too slow. 8th edition made us fast. m.horse get vanguard, warriors on average charge 3"s further, you can't expect to march block me. What this all ends up telling me is that I only lose if they beat my units before I get to them. Hence, I want even more defense.
A neat trick that I have pulled off a few times is spamming lots of hard cover/difficult terrain objects around the flanks.
Then just when he thinks his archers/war-machines are protected, in come the knights through the woods and over the cliffs with the Rangers Standard.

My main fear comes from nasty things like the skaven abomination, the steam tank, a bloodthierstier... those things that may destroy a unit of knights by their own; and I'm thinking about some defense against them: something like a tzeentch/slaanesh exalted with the archa of putrefaction for example. The rest of my defense are the obvious already mentioned items like the 4+ standard on my knights, or the ironcurse icon (wich saved lots of my tzeentch warriors last sunday on a tourney, specially when they hold the steam tank during 4 turns and survived).
I repeat: fear the abomination. I played the tourney with a level 4 MoTz, and I thought to throw Gateway to kill it if I face a skaven army. In my area people who plays skaven used to deploy 2 abominations. What do you do against them?
If i remember correctly the Abom has a low leadership like 6 and stubborn use the Doom totem, hit it with a cannon and watch it run away. Get a win in combat with a Doom totem. He needs to fail the roll and you need to catch him, if you read his rez ability he must take wounds to use it, if you run him down he will not get the roll.
Excellent point on the Abomination Red !!! I also use the scroll of shielding from the new 8th Edition book. It works better than a 25 point dispell scroll because if your opponent has irressistable force, the spell still goes off. With this scroll the unit targeted gets a 4+ ward save it works great when guys try to take lore of metal against us.....
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
Skaven Abomination: Tough, but killable.
Hit first, with fire.
OPTION 1: The Expensive Hero
Chaos Lord of Khorne with Hellfire Sword and potion of strength.
Avergae of 4 attacks out of six get through, Str 8 to Toughness 5, wounding on 2s, Say three wounds get through, and you average 1.5 addional.
Thats 7.5 wounds before he gets a hit back. Drop him in a 45pt MoS/Marauder Meat shield for impact hits at the start.
OPTION 2: The Block
Warrior Block Great Weapons/Khorne with Banner of the Eternal Flame and an Exalted/GW/Helm-of-Discord. And something that reduces his Leadership - Doom Totem, Doom and Darkness, or Iceshard Blizzard. Rolling at leadership 7 at worst, 3 at best he fails to attack and u get auto-hits on his ass.
16*str6 for the warriors, 5*str7 for the exalted. Avg 9 wounds by warriors, 4.1 for the exalted. 13 un-regenerable hits average!
OPTION 3 (my favorite and dirt cheap): Can't Touch This
2 Sorcerers, shadow and fire. One casts the withering, the other a maxed up fireball. Avg 10.5 hits, str 4 on toughness reduced to 4 (-2 avg.) That's five wounds before he even hits the front line.
OPTION 4: Knights
MOK, Knights with Lances, Banner of the Eternal Flame or Sword of Rhuin with a hero or spell to shrug off terror. 12 attacks from the front row four from the next, 16 altogether - 10.5 go through and 6.9 hit. Dead before he even blinked.

I like exalted Helm of many eyes and Glaive of Putrefaction Steed run with 5 Knights what ever mark you want and Eternal flame, this way even if he gets his rez even if you don"t kill him and even if he did rez hes a S2 T2.
