Has anyone ever used him? Is he worth the points?
I'm thinking of starting a second army, and wanted to theme it around a special character. I really like Kholek's story and wanted to make his army of mountain worshipers. For characters, I was going to use him as the General, and then a BSB, 2 Lv2s, and Wulfrick (I like his story too). Would this be a sucessful set up or would I get owned in the magic phase? Any suggestions?
Well, keep in mind that Kholek is 605 pts, and with all the chars you're talking about, you'll be spending well over 1000 on characters, which isn't possible except in a big army, and isn't a good idea even in big armies. Kholek is so expensive, I think you need to dial back your spending on Heroes to compensate.
That said, Kholek is a freaking horror. With new T-stomp, he's putting out D6+7 S8 attacks per turn, 7 of which cause D3 wounds! He's fantastic. Oh, and don't forget his shooting attack, which is freaking nasty. The only risk I see is from cannon fire, and I-test spells. Oh, and there's even a model for him out there, although it's not made by GW.

I've never used him myself, but I used to use a dragon ogre shaggoth in my beasts of chaos and that was a force to be reckoned with. I reckon if he had rules at the time, I'd have been on that like a tramp on chips! awesome rules and easy conversion if you follow this fella's lead
[carnosaur + ogre tyrant = Kholek]
That is both boss looking and (probably) very doable.
I haven't played him, but I've been itching too ever since I first read his entry in the army book. My gaming group rarely plays special characters, so I leave him at home. I do have a bad-ass model that I'm waiting to try out. Here's a link, looks just like the one in the book, awesome!

On paper, he's a beast. He's about as tough as a steamtank, is strength 8, does D3 wounds, has 8 wounds, is weapon skill 8, toughness 6, and has a whopping 7 attacks! (And he summons lightning from the heavens).
I absolutely want to take him and smash people's teeth in, but for some unfathomable reason, people don't want to play special characters around here.
By the way, if you want to buy that model, don't but it at full price. Message the people and make them an offer. I'd even start low, like $50 (US) and let them counter offer. They want to sell these and are using a mold to cast them, so it's not that expensive for them at this point (though the model is still worth the money, it's gorgeous). Check out their Festus and other special character models. The only one they don't have is the Valkyrie demon princess.
I do like that model I just don't like its face! If I do start a Chaos army I might just take a Shaggoth, as I'm afraid I'll get tore up in the magic phase. But Kholek's background is just too cool to pass up.... Decisions, decisions.....
Yes! Oh sweet Jebus, yes! I try to bring Kholek everytime I can, he is a one model wrecking crew. All the guys in my group hate him and he has only been killed once. Just watch out, he has no ward save and everyone who can cast Lore of Metal, Purple Sun, or make you take an Initiative test will come after you. I have destroyed a steam tank with him in one round of combat. Now, in 8th he will always go last, but this is usually not a problem. Just get him into combat and try to keep in it as much as possible and watch your opponent cry.
"Ok, 7 attacks, 3's to hit and 2's to wound. <rolls dice> let see, that is 5 wounds at 8 Str. Go ahead and take 5 saves at -5 to your armor."
"Well, that negates my armor save... <rolls dice> Okay, my ward saved 2 so my lord takes 3 wounds. Ha! he's still alive!"
"Well, lets see here. Now let me roll a D3 for each of those wounds. <rolls dice> 7 wounds total. How many does your Lord have?"
Also note that he does not shoot lightning, a lightning bolt simply strikes a unit during the shooting phase (he brings the storm with him). Given the size of Kholek (assuming you are using at least a shaggoth model to represent him) even if he's engaged he can still see unengaged units further away and the lightening can strike them. Herald of the Tempest says: During the shooting phase, choose an unengaged enemy unit within Kholek's line of sight and roll a dice. On a roll of 2-6 a bolt of lightning hits the unit, inflicting D6 S6 hits. On a roll of 1 the lightening hits Kholek.
Yea, you don't really "shoot it", it just happens during the shooting phase while he's in play. He's incredible really. No wonder people don't want WoC players to field him.
Ya, I have so many people, (usually my opponent) try to tell me this is a shooting attack. I just want to make it abundantly clear for any that think otherwise.
In 7th, it was quite clear that anything that happened during the shooting phase was considered shooting. They had faq'd it. I checked the 8th ed. BRB but couldn't find anything that stated that explicitly and haven't looked in the new FAQ for it.
