2 friends of mine play with heavy war machines but besides the measly 6+ Tzeentch save and the awesome Blasted Standard, is there a way to work around this? I tried Marauder Horsemen but they get torn apart before they can get any close to them.
How do you work against War Machines?
Get yourself into close combat with -anything- as soon as possible. Usually this means turn 2 if you're moderately lucky, or turn 3 if you're not. Apart from that, a screen of warhounds could help absorb a turn of fire whilst your units get into close combat.

Yup and if they ignore the dogs its not unheard of for the dogs to charge and beat a crew down. WS4 usually does the trick.
Flying characters with good ward saves work well. Golden Eye of Tzeentch works wonders against shooting armies.
