I've always been iffy on using a Sorcerer Lord on a disc but I've been wanting to give it a try. My main concern is that he is like a magnet for shooting and artillery and am wondering how do people work around this little problem while maintaining him close enough to fling his spells around.
Well, keep him near cavalry for the 4+ LOS! roll if you can. He's riding a warbeast technically, but ridden warbeasts use the rules for cavalry mounts, meaning you can claim the LOS!
I've given mine the enchanted shield and talisman of preservation, which with Tzeentch means 1+/3+ saves. That guy shrugs off a lot of shooting. The charmed shield is also good, but a cagy opponent will drop some useless shooting at your guy, like 10 archers, to negate the magical effect of the shield before hitting you with something nasty. Still, it's good when someone fires a cannonball at you or for ignoring the first "hit" of a miscast.
My question would be: why a Sorc. Lord on a disc? A lot of the spells in our book, as well as in the BRB, can be cast from foot or a steed and still be useful. The disc is for faster movement, but it's not MUCH faster than a Chaos Steed or Daemonic Mount, and it doesn't hit as hard as either of them. Now- if you're running an Exalted or a C.Lord on a disc, that's a different story. Those guys will be winging into combat on Turn 2, so you can afford to take a bit of a hit on the way in.
The item combo that Dave gave you will work extremely well, and for a cheaper alternative, you can give him the Armor of Morrslieb (4+, 3++). The Wardsave is the big thing against enemy warmachines, since if they hit you, they're going to punch right through your armor.
Hmm... sound advice, thnx guys
You put him on a disc so due to the much faster move and the more maneuverability, fly lets you well fly over friendly units, also the golden eye of tzeentch is so cheap for a 3++ save its not funny. the disc also lets you miscast without exploding your own troops and the miscast boom probably won't hurt you.
as for being shot at, your armor and ward should save you but honestly if you move so this guy is taking hits from everyone then just stop running him as you are not yet ready to use such a solid choice. In my opinion I will always use this guy just because he is frightening.
my build is
lvl 4 tzeentch sorc lord on disc
golden eye of tzeentch
blood curdling roar.
only at 370, you get a lvl 4 with 5+ to cast, knows 5 spells, 3++ ward, and 2D6 S1 no AS saves. hell of a choice.
