I am currently painting up a small chaos force, I will be playing dark elves. We will play 1500pts first of all what should i take? I have access to most models. I mean is there any real must haves.
Soft, squishy, pointy-eared artisans wish to fight the legions of the chaos gods? Just asking for trouble if you ask me.
I wouldn't think there are many "must-haves" (we're wounding on 3+'s most o' the time). Watch for magic, their 6th spell (Strength test, no armour saves) can be annoying.
Why not try a spawn? With T5, most of his army is only going to be able to wound it on 6's, and with unbreakable you can hold up his prized units while your knights/horsemen get ready to rip up the flanks or get to oppose his other units.
With only reaper bolt throwers, hopefully the shooting phase won't be too painful, so footslogging is an option.
Cold One Knights can hit quite hard (even for elves), try to get the charge to make their lances redundant and you should be okay with them.
Chaos Knights (with a 1+ save) have nothing to fear from corsairs or warriors (S3) (unless there's an assassin...). So you can just hammer those units into the dust knowing that there's nothing that can harm you.
Just take your warriors, some marauders, hounds, knights, usual shebang. Take some magic defense.
Are you considering any marks? Mono or mixed?
If someone helps you, rep them.
In a votewar you don't vote on a single match, you vote on the entire round. Got that?
I would suggest that if you go armour you need some serious countermagic against his Lore of Metal - ie. Tzeench.
Blasted Banner on a good sized block of Waariors with MoT will be a must have I'd say, with a +2MR res. hero bunkered in there.
Wulfric/Festus are always good vs these guys - if you are allowed characters. Festus with MoN Warriors, and Wulfrick with Seafang.
If he goes supershooty you can swap Tzeench for Shadows, that will absolutely ruin his BS/WS esp. against Nurgle Warriors.
Sona si Latine loqueris.
What is he bringing. If he's going all shooting, than chaos knights will win the day. If he's going executioners, you might want to stay away from knights. But yeah, get magic resistance everywhere you can and put the blasted banner on a unit. We don't have any bad options, play what you like.

An infernal puppet and a Tzeentch wizard can really screw with his druuchi magic. Aside from that, avoid things you don't need, like str 6 on stuff and such. And carry shields at all times! What you might need is a few quick and flexible units to tie things up if he tries to dodge you with fast cav and such - chaos spawn and horsemen are suitable for this. Horsemen tend to die quickly though. Aside from that, you need a Sorcerer in any case to counter his magic phase.
Edit: And a dispel scroll should almost always make back its points.
