Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was just taking a checking to see the most insanely expensive Lord could take. The winner: Sorcerer Lord of Tzeentch/Nurgle:
270pts to reach level 4
20 on Mark
100 points of items
50 on gifts
360 on the mount
That is up to 800 points on one model! Has anyone ever fielded anything even close to that number in a real battle? If not, what was your most pricey hero ever? Or unit for that matter, if it was higher than 800.

Unless I am planning on playing someone who has ZERO war machines, I shy away from running a dragon. It was bad enough having my 400 point Daemon Prince get his head lopped off by a cannon, having my dragon shot out from beneath me, and then running around on foot doesn't bring warm feelings to my heart. The same can be said for the threads that discuss having a hero on a Juggernaut. The 8th edition rules just don't favor situations were you can't roll your "look out sir"
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
I always ran a lv4 slaanesh wizard on a dragon in 7th edition, he'd break 700 points easily.

Personally I don't really go for 'expensive' Lords as I'd rather spread the wealth like making units bigger or get additional lower level heroes to bolster units.
The most expensive unit I use is 916pts. It's one huge chunk of my 3k marauder army.
Lord, Armour of Damnation, Tali of Preservation, Great Weapon, Tzeentch -322pts
BSB, Crown of Command, Opal Amulet, Shield, Tzeentch -215pts
16 Chosen, Full Command, Favour, Shields, Tzeentch -379pts
