Hey guys. Just getting back into the hobby after 7 years, and I'm building up a WoC army. Just picked up a box of Marauder Horsemen and I was wondering if anyone ever runs a group of them with a std bearer? I read that a musician is useful and on occasion a champion, but what about the sb? I'm debating whether I should put the sb together or just as another horseman.
I intend on using them primarily as harassment units, so probably with throwing axes.
It depends on what you want them to do. If you want a small unit to go off and hunt War machines, lone characters and such then a standard probably isn’t needed. Nor is it needed if you want a small throw away unit like 5 Horsemen with Flails and Mark of Khorne. These guys are designed to cause maximum carnage but die quickly.
If you want a big chunky unit of Horsemen (say 12 or so) for charging into flanks and tackling block units then I’d grab a standard to help you.
I would never ever bring a standard with these guys. Horsemen never survive to the end of the game, and it's basically giving up victory points for the captured standard.
I run a regiment of 11 MoK/Flails with a Slaaneshi Steed Exalted. The unit works well, using Vanguard to present the enemy with a choice on the first turn- either focus all shooting/magic at it, brace their lines for the charge, or let it run rampant for a few turns. It almost never survives for a full game. I still give the unit a banner though, just for the extra CR to hopefully break an enemy or ensure that I don't lose my Frenzy.
Small units shouldn't be given banners, simply because the SB himself costs too much for the returns. However, a captured banner is only worth 25pts these days, so losing one on a throwaway isn't particularly devastating.
