Welcome to Librarium Online!
Please help a noob out. I need to know how I can beat minotaur with my WOC. I am getting a rematch against a guy who had a unit with a doombull run right through my entire army last time we played.
I'm looking for whatever ideas you guys have. I was thinking I'd add a hell cannon, and perhaps try and tip the odds with the lore of shadow instead of tzeentch.
You're certainly on the right track about using the Lore of Shadows! Other than that, plain old warriors geared towards extremes of defense or offense.
A plain unit of three minotaurs should with average rolling fare something like this against plain warriors in a unit of ten (placed 2x5):
They do 9 attacks
-Armour is too low to save a wound without luck-
-No ward save-
You take 4 casualties
With a little anvil treatment (Mark of Tzeentch and Shields):
They do 9 attacks
3 pass the armour
2 pass the ward
You take 2 casualties
With the former you could opt to take additional hand weapons and maybe a Mark of Khorne, you'd strike first with 20 attacks from your first rank alone.
Toss in supporting attacks, that's 25. With the latter, you won't do as much damage with only 15 attacks, but let's look at how combat goes for both (with average rolling).
Khorne with Ad. Hand Weapons:
8-9 miss, we'll assume 16 hits since it's better to assume it goes worse rather than better for us
-Armour eaten by strength-
They take 2 casualties and leaves the last minotaur with 1 wound
Since you'd strike first in combat, this would probably lead to you only taking 1-2 casualties since 2/3 of the enemy unit would be dead and unable to strike.
Tzeentch with Shields:
-Armour eaten by strength-
They take 1 casualty and leaves two minotaurs, one of which will have 1 wound remaining.
Striking first, you would probably look at only taking one casualty in combat.
Looking over this, I'd say go with Khorne unless he has a very large unit and you'd rather mow them down with magic (Pit of Shades!) using your warriors to keep them occupied (using this to launch a flank charge with warriors of the Khorne set up would be swell). Tzeentch set up will hold them in place better, but it'll take too long to cut them down, so unless they break and you manage the pursuit, they'll be held up for quite some time against larges units. The only real hurt the minotaurs would deliver could be from a lucky impact hit, or if you get caught in the flank/rear. The doombull I'd handle with either magic before he can get to you, or by tailoring a lord to beat him in a challenge (killing blow would be super).
I've yet to face Beastmen (but I will be doing so this weekend hopefully) so this is all going of the info at GW's website and I don't know about what special rules they may have up their sleeve or wicked tricks they can pull through magic, but maybe there's something of use amongst all this
This all makes sense, and I'm glad your feeling shadow. It sounds good on paper, but am considered about his doombull/minos as I don't think my warriors got destroyed by them in the last game.
There are a few things I learned in playing this beastmen army last time. There are 2 spells that can be used as powerful buffs that cast very easily. One buffs a unit, the other a specific model (i.e: doombull). Try not to let this go off. Also, they have a rule called blood greed, I dont know the specific mechanics, but the more they kill, the more attacks they get.
I know your pain. A similar unit gave my 2k list no end of grief. Everything else in his list was chod apart from one unit of 6 Minotaur with Doom bull. He picked on small units like spawn to grab the extra attack bonus for winning combat before he committed them to my Warriors. I think each Mino was kicking out 6 or 7 attacks at str7. So a tip from me, don’t feed them chod troops. It only makes them stronger and harder to deal with. Also, do not attack a Doom Bull with something that won’t kill him in combat (ie a Lord). Doom Bulls usually pack a 2+ Save and for every passed save they get to make a free attack (at str6). Obviously you can challenge him out with a champion or hero to reduce the pain to your Warrior unit but if you don’t have either of these, don’t waste your attacks as it will only hurt you in the long run.
Your best unit for taking them out is going to be Warriors. Probably best to have Halberds and Khorne and kill them quickly before they kill you. Then just hope to win on combat resolution (and hope to have some models standing) and run him down.
Shadow Magic will definitely help here. Everything Shadow Magic does will benefit you. Lowering their WS, Str or Toughness will reduce the kills they do to you or make you wound them more easily.
Halberds is really the way to go here, like Lord Borak says. Halberds and Mark of Khorne - just skewer them. Perhaps Chosen will work for you even better. And use damage spells to reduce their numbers beforehand.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Quick post, but what about Festus, his curse of the leper could soften them up enough so that your standard warriors are able to hurt them and finish them off.
