Looks like these guys don't have much utility in them as they did back in 7th. What are peoples current setups for them, as anytime I've tried them they have sadly disappointed me.
Tried the tried and true khorne cruise missles from 7th (MoK + Flails). I figured the vanguard move, and not being forced to charge would be great, but this didn't seem to work out and they were quickly dispatched.
Went throwing axes + MoS one game to be bait and harass. Also seemed to be pretty lame, throwing axes are quick to fire but seem to suffer from long range shots if they aren't like right ontop of the unit they are firing at (In 7th thrown weapons didn't suffer from long range, but I couldn't seem to find that here).
Is there a trick to using them now, or should I just abandon them?
If they're getting shot at, then mark of nurgle is probably better.
But to be honest, the only real application i see now is war-machine and lone wizard hunting.
How many do you use and in what size units?
WORSHIP THE VINDICATOR!!! (And a Drop Pod full of Combie-Melta Sternguard never hurts either)
5 Horsemen with Flails and the Mark of Slaanesh is a good buy for Warmachine hunting, but then so are Chaos Hounds.
I use them in my Marauder army and use 2 units of 10 with Standards, Slaanesh, spears and shields and armour. They are there to hunt light cav and annoy things. I have 6 untis of 5 hounds to give them a helping hand as well and it provides too many targets for people to take down before the hit their Warmachines. If they target the Horsemen well they're immune to panic so they'll have to kill all 10. If they shoot at the hounds well..........they're only hounds.
Works quite well for me but tat might be the armies I play. What armies do you find them less effective against? or find them useless against?
They can be quite a let down against armies with lots of ranged weapons, but they can be very useful since they have the maneuverability most of our other units lack. I tend to run 10 strong with flails, musician, standard and mark of khorne. A bit costy, but they usually do well enough. At times they just die, of course... <\3
But yes, for hunting down those annoying little units your warriors cannot catch they are really great. Or just providing some extra punch somewhere if needed by your other units. A daemon prince can do their job as well though, being even better at it though a lot more costy.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Thanks for your input I'll have to try out your suggested formations and see how they fare for me.
My lists usually consist of warriors and knights, with 2 or so units of hounds. I've been taking marauder horsemen recently for warmachine hunting or to go after smaller weak units. I play against empire and wood elves primarily, and often find them getting shot down. Guess I don't have as much target saturation as Lord Borak does.
I only have 10 models, and have been running them in 2 separate units. Usually upgraded with MoK and equipped with Flails.
I'll have to see how a single 10 man unit fares. I'll definatly give the 10 strong with flails, musician, standard and MoK a try in my next game. Is it worth giving them light armor?
As for the layout of 10 with Standards, MoS, spears, shields and armor. Do you find the loss of fast cav to be a hindrance? I guess you play a marauder based force, so are these your replacement for knights?
Not really but then if you never had it before it's hard to miss it. Thinking about it now though I might try it out with them as fast Cav. They are indeed my substitiute for Knights, they're probably not very points effective to be honest (a unit of 5 Khorne knights would be better) but I like the models and they're not that bad in the game. Good for the job I want them for anyway.
