Well my little army list has finally found its match having butchered its way through orcs, elves of many types and dwarves galore... rats (specificially slaves)
Big block of warriors
10 khorne flail horsemen
Engineer with doomrocket
Massive block of slaves (60?)
Clanrats (30) with warpfire thrower
2 Warp Lightning Cannon
Having deployed my warriors dead centre, he plonked down his slaves with clanrats behind right opposite.
He hit me on turn 2 with the slave block and then threw every type of template right on top of them, giving a 50/50 chance of it hitting me, needless to say, a LOT of warriors died.
Luckily horsemen eventually ate the 2 WLC and then died to his rat ogres. I then broke through the slaves and got a good charge on the clanrats driving them off the board.
I was left with 2 warriors and my warshrine, he was left with 2 rat ogres..
where we unfortunately had to call time..
How on earth do I avoid this in future? I wanted to leave my horsemen to deploy last so I could smash his WLC with them, but I am always going to get held up and bombarded due to the slaves..
All you need to do is have enough units to go after those Cannons and other artillary peices. Chaos Hounds and horsemen are good for the job of hunting things like those. How are you running those horsemen? One unit of 10 of two untis of 5? Two units of 5 would give you more flexibility and be able to hunt two warmachines rather than one at a time.
Also, consider things like The Blasted standard on your Warriors to keep the worst of the enemy fire off.
You could always tar pit his tar pit. Charge his Skaven slaves with a Spawn, or better Scylla and hold them there all game.
Oh wow, you've just made me feel like a total idiot, I forgot I had paid for a blasted standard in that warriors unit. Well that would have made a massive difference, thanks.
Also have tried them in 2 squads but never really liked it, only took one round of shooting to totally destroy them, only four made it to his first WLC as they are in a group of 10
Thanks again, Chaos will reign supreme again next time.
Skaven are a nusence at low points level battles, with them being able to bring a large amount of stuff even there, but think yourself fortunate that there was no hellpit abomination, grey seer, jezzails, toold up assassins... all the really nasty stuff that is difficult to deal with effectively
Although, having said that, I did use third eye to cast plague multiple times on his huge blocks last time I played skaven so the seer is not such a bad thing to have to face. It was the hellpit, which undid me completely - I thought one unit of 15 warriors would handle it but he seemed to dish out an absurd number of attacks (3d6 and a thunderstomp) and I was not able to last long enough to finish it off with it regenerating.
But, yeah, like Borak is saying you really dont want to be bothering with those slaves at all if you can possibly avoid them - they are almost worthless in points gain and take too long to chop to pieces, certainly long enough for him to either pour fire into the combat or line up a second unit to hit you in the flank. Unless, that is, you have killed his general - then the slaves useless leadership is not going to survive a break test even if they are steadfast.
Oh those Hell Pits are NASTY !! You really have to take a flaming banner now of days in order to combat regen...
Casting your opponents spell on them is such a wonderful ability....
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
Disk Rider brings up a good point in killing his general could make a world of difference. Try expirementing with other lords such as the lore of death. If you can snipe out his general his slaves won't be able to hold very long even if they are steadfast. Also, to keep from getting out deployed like that, try to use a few units of war hounds. They are dirt cheap, so who cares if he kills them, they are capable of hurting war machine crews, but most importantly they use up a deployment. I mainly use mine for that last purpose, but if you want to try using gem more aggressively, I know that Lord Borak has done so to great success. He would be a good person to ask for tips on how to use them effectively.
Well, against Skaven I usually bring a Chaos Lord on a Disc and with BoS (and dont forget preservance) to get that signaturespell in Death. Cast it on a plaguefurnace, WLC or the bell, and you'll destroy it in a single cast (since they have 0 LD).
That way, all you have to worry about is the A-bomb and the huuge number of useless slaves
WLC are warmachines so you would use the crews LDR to test for spirit leech, The Bell and the Furnace re Mounts so you would use the Grey seer/PLague monks LDR respectively for spirit leech.
Skaven are pretty tough sometimes, if you know you are playing them then you NEED the banner of eternal flame, I like it on khorne warriors with halberds, they will tear an HPA up in the first round of combat. I always deploy them after the abom goes down and as close to it as possible. Works good for hydras too.
Tzeentch wizards with pandamonium work pretty good against skaven, even with strength in numbers their slaves and clanrats are only leadership 5 / 8 respectively with full strength in number bonus.

The problem I encountered with Flaming on footsloggers is that it has to be his decision to enter that combat.
I tried hunting it down, but it always kept away from them, and getting itself stuck in combat outside my LoS. Bad maneuvering on my part.
I'd prefer some Knights with the banner to be able to dictate when and where I fight him. Also helps with that d6 Thunderstomp.
About the Disc, so far, every game I played with Skaven they had the Banner of Storms. Rendering my Disc riders (yes plural) useless, costing me a good part of the game.
Slightly ot, how do you deal with Doom Wheels?
