Would anyone suggest using large units of knights, around 20 models strong, 10 wide 2 deep? If I did field them I would give them banner of rage and mark of Nurgle, to stop opponents taking advantage of frenzy they would be placed in the centre of the army but screened by two units of 5 warhounds, to mop up shooting and stop my knights being charged. Would this work?
Now, with that configuration, I can only surmise you are going against horde units yourself, which knights are great at killing imho. But ten wide? you can lower the width by two at least and still hit with two attacks + horse + support attacks = 32 attacks at Str5. That will decimate any horde unit around. And to be honest, I often use my knights to block for other more important units, a 1+ armor save vs arrows makes them dang tough to kill. Seems like a LOT of points to be used in one unit.
I'm still a relative noob, so I could be wrong here, but I think you could achieve what you want with half the knights and use the points elsewhere.
Not the best idea in my opinion. You will not be maximizing the number of attacks unless you are fighting a horde. If you wanted to go 6x3 you might get more bang for your buck, and that extra rank might give you steadfast in the event you lose combat resolution. Still putting that many points in one area is asking for some shooting or ugly magic being cast against it. I'll try it out for sure, and tell you how it goes..
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
The trouble is that once you've gone 10 wide, you may as well just Horde up. Your unit is no more effective than a pair of 10 man Knight regiments fighting in the same combat.
And why Knights anyways? Your second rank can't attack with their steeds, and if you look closely at a C.Knight's profile, you'll see that he's really just a Warrior with a Halberd, riding a Horse. Why so much mobility? Are you really going to send that large a portion of your army out unsupported? You're going to want regiments who can keep pace with that block, and protect it's flanks or get into combat to relieve it when things go wrong. Usually Knights fill this role for Warriors, providing enough speed and area of effect to get around flanks, run down flanking enemy cavalry, and score vital CR when our Warriors just can't pull through.
If you're really going to Horde anything other than Marauders, I'd go with Warriors. That 1 block easily meets your core requirements in anything up to 2000pts, freeing you up to take the rest of your army in Special and Rare if you so desire.
With Frenzied you are going to be forced to over run, and any smart opponent knows that. he´ll send you flying into woods and other terrain.
If you plan on taking such a large unit I would go all the way and put a BSB in there as well.
Give the BSB the Blasted Standard, and take the Rangers Standard on the unit (or other way round). That way you will have a good ward vs shooting, and can freely move through woods etc.
Had a cracking experience in Battle with 9 Knights of Nurgle & Banner of Rage and a Chaos Lord with the following build;
Chaos Runesword, Armour of Damnation.
Was playing another 8000 game against High Elves and decided to charge a horde of 90 High Elf Spearmen, 1 Prince, 1 Noble, 1 BSB (Battle Banner), Level 2 Life Mage.
Thankfully Teclis (with Shaddow) died earlier at the hands of the Infernal Puppet, (1 wound from Changing a Dragon Mages Mis-Cast) and the Feedback Scroll.
In the previous game the Spearmen Horde supported by Teclis went on a slaughtering rampage so i thought i'd see if the Knights could at least hold it up.
After 10 Rounds of Bloody Combat the Knights had lost 8 whilst slaughtering all the Characters except the life Mage, 56 Spear Elves, 1 Sun Dragon (which Flank Charged).
Moral of the Story, Chaos Knights are still fricking legit!
Okay, thanks for the info, just wandering.
