I'm thinking about investing in the new model when it comes out next week. Has anyone run one in 8th? Is it worth the pts? Also does anyone know if the monsters taken from the new monsters and magic allowance can be used as mounts?
No idea about the impact of SoM and whether they can be taken as mounts or not.
I've run a Sorc Lord on a Manticore and wasn't that impressed tbh.
Monsters in general aren't great in 8th edition because they have to do tonnes of wounds per round just to overcome static combat resolution from ranks and banners. Also most monstrous mounts are easy to kill so they don't last long. My experience with the manticore was terrible, I had to hide behind buildings a lot to avoid archery fire and eventually got charged by some savage orc boar riders. Their Champ challenged me, my wizard killed him on initiative 5 for a single wound so my manticore never got to strike or Thunderstomp for overkill. They had a rank, a banner and the charge so I lost combat, fled and was caught. 500+ pts down the toilet to a nothing unit.
I think flying wizards could be pretty handy in SoM to zip off and steal unguarded fulcrums, but Disc of Tzeentch is a much better purchase!
I think monsters are alot better in 8th edition than the previous editions due to the bonuses of thunderstomp, making up for the disadvantage of static combat res. the previous poster did touch on the problems with challenges tho, as your manticore will be in a challange insted of normal combat almost all the time.
the Manticore costs almost as much as the lord you place on it, so it's a pretty big investment, and with all investments you want to make sure it's the right one. Some armies/lists will be vulnerable to this build while others will have no trouble in dispatching the monster, so use with discresion.
if you want a manticore then play dark elves as they can put a hero on one and use it in lower points games
also it means a cannon will have a harder time killing it as the strenth is reduced by half so it will need 4's to wound instead of 2's
as far as manticores go though, they are meah
they have killing blow wich can be anoying and make your opponent think twice about challanging it but apart from that it doesnt do much
ok you can fly and take out warmanchine but if they guy has alot of warmachine it will probably be dead b4 it gets there
if the rider dies it gets frenzy and hatred which is fun but tbh for its points i wld much rather have more warriors (or if your dark elves a hydra)
put it this way, a manticore is 200 and something points while a carnisaur is 10 points less i think but is about a million times better with S7 and doing d3 wounds and gets frenzied after its 1st wound.
i wld much rather spend the extra 100 something points for a chaos dragon
If you wanna fly, a disc of tzeentch is a far better choice.
